Hello, I put the cassette into the FS90 and press play and the tape starts spinning but it does not play audio or video. The counter does not increment, it stays at 00:00:00
The head is clean and the mechanisms are functioning correctly. I appreciate the collaboration in finding the error. Thank you William |

Looks like a G mechanism.
Open the top. Is the tape fully threaded? Does it touch the Audio/control (A/C) head? The lack of the counter is a dead giveaway. The half-load arm should move the tape across to the head when it is first inserted, it sounds like this may have failed. If however, tape is in contact and threaded well, check the connector on the head and clean the head thoroughly. There was also a power supply fault on one model which gave similar symptoms, hopefully someone else with a better memory will clarify.

That's a G2 mech model. The main difference is the extra motor for reverse playback/reverse search modes. I agree with Ben. Nothing will work correctly if no control track pulses are being picked up by the A/C head. I've seen the half-load (P5 guide) arm seize on G decks because of hardened grease. Once you remove the nut that holds it in place to lubricate it, you have to get the height adjustment right otherwise the top or bottom edge of the tape will crease during operation.

If the machine is fine mechanism-wise, check the capacitor mentioned below in the July 2000 issue of Television Magazine.

I've got a similar issue on my NV-F65 G deck. My counter appears to work OK on play but on RWD it doesn't move. Should of tried FFWD) I've just realigned this deck and had taken the p5 arm off and it's back on now. Maybe it's due to that as folk have mentioned the p5 on this thread. Maybe too loose now and in the half load position isn't touching the ACE. Could also be the p4 arm on mine since when I took it off the plastic mould circlip on top broke so maybe it's slipping a bit since when I move it towards the ACE the counter kicks in.

I've adjusted the p5 screw but getting it spot on is difficult especially when you don't want the tape rubbing too hard against the ACE.

Got it counting for RWD and FFWD now, but when I return to the start there's a few seconds discrepancy depending on how long it was played. Not ideal but I can live with it.
