Not really vintage, its from 1999 and it still works very well. Some years ago all of a sudden the screen flopped down. Investigation showed that the hinges themselves provided no friction to movement. I tried cleaning and filling with epoxy, Seemed Ok but although I tried opening and closing at least a dozen times I got the impression it would not last. On a vintage computer site it was suggested that I apply a small amount of lubricant. I did this and I was almost back to where I started.
It needs something like Denso seal which is always sticky, never dries out but I think it needs to be a bit denser. Contact area each side is 40mm sq. Any Ideas anyone? M |

You may be able to buy a pair of good hinges from a computer dismantler, or even buy a complete scrap 8000 from somewhere like eBay.
It's an old computer though, and if it's been well used throughout its life it may just have reached the end of the road. Lots of things may be getting tired by now. |

I used it daily for about 5 years, It was superb, it never hung even with large map data files unlike its successor, an Acer which although it was faster, had more Ram and was still running the same version of XP. I still use the old Inspiron for programming old phones and it is the only thing for making GIFs from AVIs, MPGs etc. Screen definition fantastic at 1600x1200.
New hinges are over a 100 quid. I tried the blue Loctite yesterday it is slightly better allows about a 10 degree shift from vertical before it goes. I might drill and tap the holder part to fit some grub screws with flat ends. Nylon grub screws? As for getting tired, I am using an 8 year old Inspiron now which has the keyboard giving up the ghost and during its life has had more than a few little niggles, The old one has no defects apart from the hinges and being a bit slow 1Gig processor 384Mb Ram and 80G 5200 rpm HDD.
