Plasma from a failing rectifier valve
I saw this video on YouTube
http://youtu.be/nuJlxgGdlIc In the first part of the video the guy drives the tube until it fails. I haven't seen anything like it before. |

Re: Plasma from a failing rectifier valve
1. the violet light show
2. when the green light show appears from the getter plates 3. when the valve plates glow red hot 4. the point just before failure where there is a criss cross pattern in the middle of the valve The second part where he uses the base for an adapter isnt particualry interesting but the light show in my opinion is. If you have seen this all before then ok but for me it was pretty impressive |

Re: Plasma from a failing rectifier valve
I have seen a rectifier produce a bright green glow that reflected on the wall behind the set. It was long enough ago that a local shop had a replacement.
I have also seen the purple glow in an output pentode. It slowly went to air over a period of several years. Perhaps that rectifier was also slowly going to air. |

Re: Plasma from a failing rectifier valve
Its quite common to have BLUE glow walking around inside a good hard bottle.
Hard means the vacuum is excellent. Purple glow means the valve is gassy and will sooner or later fail. I read somewhere that a "good hard" valve will have something like one one hundred millionth of air pressure inside. ( was RCA manual) 1/100,000,000 That is even less than deep space!! Joe |
