Default Gold star VW-300. Burning smell... now vertical white lines

Hey all
I've had this set for a while, quite a cheap feeling one, from 1979, a Gold star VW-300. It was working perfectly well for quite a few months, until this evening when a horrible burning smell started emanating from it, and now there's some vertical white lines running from the top to the bottom of the screen (see attached pic). Does anyone have an idea of what part might need replaced/servicing? Please be aware I don't have much experience working with old tv sets. I'm gonna leave the set switched off for a few days so it can discharge.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, dajahew

Just a few thoughts. The line linearity coil could be dry joint causing it's damping resistor to take all the current and burn up. Another possible cause could be the scan coupling capacitor or line output stage 3rd harmonic tuning capacitors dry jointed and finally shorted. I don't know this particular receiver but if something has burned, a very critical look around the line output stage may be revealing. John.
