Or worse, people with an 'old telly' seeking out your phone number to sell it, never mind if their set actually dates from the 1980s... I've already had one of these this morning; no I don't know how where he got my number.

Still, all publicity for the cause must be good publicity, etc....

I think I'm going to be on ITV news sometime tomorrow. Today was a bit of a heavy news day what with the Apollo 11 anniversary and whacking the Aussies at Lords. This meant that human interest stuff was at the bottom of the news agenda. It was all meant to happen tomorrow except that my local paper broke the embargo and everything got reorganised at short notice.

Should be on BBC Online tomorrow too. And in the Radio Times.

Congratulations, Jeffrey! I think this is not only the oldest working electronic tv set in the UK but in whole Europe. The oldest working tv set in Germany is from 1937, and I have no other informations of older working tv sets in other European countries.

Kind regards,
Eckhard

Considering that Television, well at least the 'high definition' electronic 405 line system was the first such system in the world, it's likely that Jeffrey's set is the oldest working TV in the world.

Obviously if we include mechanical TV there will be a number of older sets.

BBC Online appearance with Rory Cellan-Jones

Apparently I was mentioned on ITV news this morning. My name and Iain Baird's picture!

Got a phone call at about 0530 this morning from a Sydney radio station. I let the answering machine take it. If I get back to them I'll just talk about cricket

Was there ever a regular broadcast service for mechanical TV's?

We know that John Logie Baird invented the mechanical TV, but at 30 lines it wasn't a really practical solution (though in the last few years it has made a sort of brief comeback) and AFAIK any broadcasts were purely for experimental purposes.

Yes, in the early 1930s. From Brookmans Park after normal broadcast hours. While it was clearly experimental, the entertainment value was greater than was often thought. Donald McLean has done extensive research on the subject and written an excellent book "Restoring Bairds Image".

I'll second that! I thought Jeffrey really brought it to life.

Does your set have a 240/405 changeover switch Jeffrey?

Just heard the broadcast Jeffrey at about 5.40pm Sydney time. The interviewer was Jason Morrison who runs a drive time show. Considering the interviewer is totaly non technical and the show is for people driving home from work it was quite good. It lasted about 5minutes

Just like to add my congratulations Jeffery. After watching your piece with Rory Cellan-Jones I think you have a future career in broadcasting! Very well done indeed.
