Southport is around 70 miles North West of Stockport so even further than you thought.

I was in Aintree this week which is around 20 miles from the O/P. I have offered a few times to help him both with the no sound fault and servicing the record deck but it seemed to fall on deaf ears.

Michael, yes you did offer to help but unfortunately we do not have the spare £500 you quoted for your services.

When we attempt to solder the copper conductors to the connectors, does it matter which which way round we place the wires in, i.e red then blue or blue then red?

No, but I thought only the blue wire was disconnected?

Both wires are disconnected, we found this out when we removed the cartridge to have a look at it. So to confirm, it doesn’t matter which way round the wires are soldered back on, they can go back on in any order.

With a mono cartridge such as this it doesn't matter which wire goes on which pin.

As Edward mentioned there may be a braided screen surrounding the wires. This must not be connected to the cartridge.

Thanks for everyone’s input so far, we are complete novices at this so we just want to double check before we do anything! I’ve attached some photos of where we think the wires need to be soldered, first we need to expose some wire on both red and blue wires, then solder the exposed copper wire onto each connector, replace the cartridge into the head and screw back in. Can anyone confirm this is the correct process. Many thanks.

Correct.

DON'T WHATEVER YOU DO, SOLDER TO THE CONNECTORS WHILST THEY'RE STILL ATTACHED TO THE PINS. YOU'LL DESTROY THE CARTRIDGE.

Ok, how do we remove the connectors from the cartridge?

Do we use pliers to remove the connectors from the cartridge?

Patience! I'm trying to repair my own stuff whilst answering questions in the forums.

The connectors just slide off, but may need a bit of persuasion after all these years.

Thanks. Is there a possibility that the actual pin may come out too if pulled too hard or is the pin supposed to come out too?

Don't pull too hard.

The pins are not supposed to come out...If they do it's curtains...The push on connectors usually pull off easy....But...

If they don't pull off real easy then open up the slot in the push on connector with a small flat blade screwdriver, the connectors should then be very easy to remove....Once removed solder the wires to the solder tags (try not to get solder into the tube part) then retighten the connector by gently closing up the slot that was previously opened up, you can gently use pliers to do that.

When done and when the connectors are cool push the connectors back on to the cartridge pins.

Never wiggle the pins.

Lawrence.

Thanks. One of the pins seem a little wobbly, will this make the cartridge unusable? Is it worth trying to source a new one?

All you can do is to try it and see.

I kinda like these old radiograms, if the cartridge turned out to be duff I would be trying to source some kind of replacement if it were mine, the choice of new cartridges is limited, some on here have used the Chinese ones, I can't advise on the fitting of them because I've no experience of them, a few on here have though.

Lawrence.

We've advised on replacement cartridges earlier in this Thread - and in some detail.
You cannot buy a new direct replacement for the original Collaro.

That would have been the worse scenario and including servicing both the deck and the radio section. As I said earlier, these radiograms are over 60 years old and I would need to make sure the whole thing was safe.

The deck is very complicated and needs quite a bit of time to get it serviced properly.

Hi, unfortunately we’ve pulled out one of the pins on the cartridge, we’ve placed it back in, will the cartridge still work, we don’t want to solder and try it if it will damage the whole thing. Thanks

You can try it, but no soldering please. Re-read the detailed advice given earlier about soldering to the connectors only.
