Default Help identify radio please

Are there any watchers of the 'Goodnight Sweetheart' series on this forum. It's now come round again and reminded me that in our hero Gary's wartime shop there is a large quite rounded radio. When the series was on originally I was in contact with lots of vintage radio people none of whom could identify it. You never get a really good view of it.

So the question here is:- does anyone know what it is, or is it a mock up?

Jim

I'd be very surprised indeed if it were a mockup Jim.

Please stick to identifying the radio to which Jim refers.

So far this still-young thread has had one post heavily edited and two further posts removed. Ken Barlow, the Rovers Return, UHF aerials, Morris Minors and a burning Rolls-Royce have nothing whatsoever to do with the thread topic.

Thinking practically here; why would the production team go to the bother of making a mock up unless they had far too much time and money on their hands! Surely they could have got a cheap woody from the 30's / 40's for much less than the cost of making a new radio - and by all standards it doesnt look too badder a job! Saying that though, I am certainly not familliar with this radio. I agree it does look a bit American. The plot thickens

I think it's a mockup - the knobs look very suspicious. A skilled specialist props workshop could turn that out very quickly - it may just be cardboard or polystyrene underneath!

Thanks folk for your replies. I think the screen shot, and thanks for that Frank, makes it look even more like a mock up.

If I get a minute I'll ask the blokes on the American forum if they recognize it. That's if you don't mind me using your screen shot.

No problem use away.
I snapped it with the intention of asking the very same question but you got in there before me.
Great minds think alike.
It would be good to get a definitive answer.

I doubt that it is American. Doesn`t seem the right shape to me.

I don't recognise it at all but that "tuning" knob not only seems to be in a wrong place but is so very incongruous Surely even the most inept mock up [done by someone nontechnical] would involve a better match of scale and colour? On the basis of that thinking, it looks more like what is often actually seen in practise ie an original set that someone has just stuck a bizarre addition on to! Just my view but not OT [I hope]. It looks very strange shape and arrangement of knobs .Looks to me like someones interpretation of what they think a vintage set looked like , but didnt bother to do any reserch . Seams odd not to use a real set , but they probably would have chosen a DAC90a

I've put it on the American forum. Here's the URL for anyone who'd like to watch the response.

"We all think it's a mock up. "

'All'? I'll lay a fiver that it's not. Gut feeling...

For what its worth I found another screen shot from a different angle.
It looks nearly too deep.

It certainly does look too deep. I wonder if it's been adapted from some pre-existing wooden object such as a sewing machine case.

Looks far too deep? Is it even a radio? Puzzling. Dave

Looks like an old sewing machine cover to me! Did anyone spot the bakelite set on the top shelf of the dexion type racking in the episode shown last night?

Three people on the American forum think it's fake and most of us do here too. Would be interesting to find out for certain just what it is.
