HMV 50s Radio
Hi everyone,
I have a HMV 50s radio, now I have switched it on and it lights up fine, appears powerful enough but only receives static on all channels. It might seem a simple question, but do I need an aerial to obtain stations? and if so, how do I make a simple one to test it? Pics are enclosed. Thanks in advance |

Re: HMV 50s Radio
There is s frame aerial inside the set shown on the left of the third photo, these are directional so turning the radio could help. There is a plate aerial for short wave but no doubt an external aerial fo SW would help.
However the radio appears untouched so will require at least one capacitor tested for leaks, which it probably will, and replacing. There are are others as well require testing and perhaps replacing. Time for some testing before switching it on again or it could cause damage. Appears to be this one. https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/hismasters_hmv_1360.html

Re: HMV 50s Radio
It's a non isolated set, so in addition to that output valve grid coupling capacitor, there are a couple of others that should be replaced with Y-rated safety capacitors- the aerial input capacitor and the isolating capacitor between the chassis and the signal earth socket.
Take extra care if working on the set live, don't connect any earthed test equipment to it and feed it from an RCD plug if the sockets in the house aren't already thus protected.
