Re: Radio 4 and "Five Live" on vintage radio
Presumably, these days, the AM is applied at an earlier stage in the transmitter, rather than modulating the output stage? Of course, the output stage would then need to be linear and therefore less efficient, but on the other hand, the power of the modulator would need to be less.
I don't suppose they'll be spending much money on these things, in terms of maintaining superior sound quality, as the switch off approaches over the next decade or so. Cheers Aub |

Re: Radio 4 and "Five Live" on vintage radio
Now I have been made to think about it ,although the sound of R4 from my HMV is very good , I can now hear what I think you mean about the slight distortion on speech and the s .. Im sure it could be much purer ,but its not too bad . R 3 on digital has a very strange sound quite flat and need s turning up more, Its a shame but we have to put up with it

Re: Radio 4 and "Five Live" on vintage radio
R4LW does seem to vary with its audio quality its only my old 1970's ITT Colt tranny that does not seem to be effected by it, possibly due to its narrower IF and less top end on the audio. BBC R5 Live on 909 from Clevedon always sounds good and a lot better than R5L on DAB.
