Default fm valve receiver circuit anyone got a good one.

I'll freely admit im to thick to design a radio circuit but im looking to construct something with a few valves in it to pick up fm , not overly complicated using as much scrap rubbish im likely to have laying round as possible please .
would really like something that uses as old a valve type as possible ( im funny like that ).

i have access to plenty of 40's and 50's valves .

any help greatly appreciated.

The Jason FM tuner of the '50s is pretty simple, I'm sure someone on here has got a circuit for it.

I was going to suggest the Jason too, uses 4 EF91s and works well, see here:-

Hi,
I have just rebuilt a Jason tuner, the circuit is available from the service data at the top of the page.
The MK1 earlier one uses EF91s and the later MK2 and 3 use EF80s.
I rebuilt a MK3 as a MK2 and am very impressed with the results.
Regards,
Rob

This one is very recent and may not be old enough for you but I have from Short wave magazine August 1995 2 valve VHF receiver. Uses 2 x ECC 86's.

It wouldn't be difficult to add an audio section to the aforementioned tuner.

As others said. Making an FM front end from scratch is not an easy thing to do.

The two valve I mentioned is a radio with LS output and is intended for 115 to 185 Mhz and is optimised to reduce any RF radiation rather than sensitivity.

There's a couple of designs in the 18th edition of Practical Wireless Circuits.
I could scan them.

There was a complete FM radio in a PW constructional article some 50 odd years ago.

I am pretty sure it was Jan/Feb/Mar 1960. This used a few EF91 in the RF stages (4?) and a couple of PP EL91, I think, in the AF Output. I know I have the first two articles in the loft but don't have the final part. I remember the Feb edition, for definate, as it also had the 6K7 superhet in it which others may remember.
I'm sure it had a magic Eye as well. A nice straightforward little set which I had intended to make.......... one day..

Failing that I have a service manual for my Dynatron Ether Minstrell which is switch tuned FM only with lots of old fifties EF80s and PP EL84s in the output. Eleven valves in total, Foster Sealey discriminator and would be reasonably straightforward to copy if you have the expertise.

HTH

If you look here

http://vintageradio.me.uk/radconnav/valvetrf/

and scoll down a little to Acorn VHF Superregen: 954 DET20: A.Sydenham June 1964.

Unless the VHF superregen included an RF stage you might annoy your neighbours by spraying noise over the FM band near whatever station you are tuned to.

Hi, for a good output stage add the Mullard 3-3 onto the Jason.
This amp has been the subject of fairly recent threads and the parts are easily available.

Now that is simple - and clever, I've never seen an EB91 used as an HT rectifier before though.

I would be tempted to build a pulse counting fm receiver cool386 has some designs on his website. http://cool386.tripod.com/pcrx/pcrx.html

He also has an interesting 1 valve loudspeaker radio using a ECL84.
