Default HMV 2041 not dropping records

hi everyone, my son is vintage audio mad and has bought an HMV 2041 record player. Trouble is it won't drop the records! I've had a look and freed a few bits off but still won't drop. I can't see how the pin on the spindle is activated to make it drop, anyone got any pointers please?

I suspect the (removable) centre stacking spindle is not correctly located. Take it out and then re-insert it. Rotate it until you feel it engage and them push down to secure it.

Pretty sure its correctly seated, pushes down until it clips in and engages a divot on the side of the spindle.

I noticed that the rear transit screw (and perhaps the other one) is in the transit postion, it should be screwed down when in use.

Just in case you don't know, the overarm needs to be in place over the record for the spindle to work.

its hard to see but it looks to me as though the spindle facing the wrong way. Has the centre boss been turned 180 degrees?
