An old friend. Philips PM5509
This pattern generator sat in John's workshop for many years, I remember him showing me what it was for and how it worked when I was probably around 10 or so. He had bought it at the liquidation auction when Bush Ireland closed. Apparently it had been wired up to the internal RF distribution system for the production line.
When I started messing with old tellies I would run up to the shop for a lend, He eventually told me to hold onto it! The pots had become noisy, and the rf output had started to drift. I had read about decoupler electrolytics that go leaky so decided to replace them. With the covers off it was clear that it had received attention in the past. The regulator transistors had been moved from the top panel and mounted on large heat sinks bolted to the back cover. The modification was carried out to a high standard. Anyway with the electrolytics replaced and the pots and switchs cleaned, I found 2 bulbs I had kept from a scrap hi-fi to replace the meter lamps with. Sadly the frequency meter has an open circuit movement so does not work and it's missing a button on the frequency selector. I've since got my hands on a PM5415 and a PM5515, which are a real joy to use, so this won't see too much use but will come out when I need something a bit portable. Cheers, John Joe. |

The modification looks like cabling and connectors from a V2000 videorecorder were used. Very appropriate.

Re: An old friend. Philips PM5509
I've had mine from new and had very few problems with it apart from the odd ic change ,a few dry joints and dirty pots and presets. The only mods I've done is to provide a standard Belling Lee aerial socket in parallel with the RF output BNC and built an isolation amp to provide a subcarrier feed for alignment purposes.Altogether its a very useful portable piece of kit.Peter.

Re: An old friend. Philips PM5509
Normally the only electrolytics you need to change are the ones of the smallest diameter, these seem to be much less durable than the bigger ones.
I've modified my PM5509 so that the video socket on the back also has audio connections, so a standard DIN AV cable can be used. These units have an excellent fully tuneable modulator which covers all broadcast bands plus TV IF and its useful to have this modulated with whatever you want. The RF amplifier IC (OM - something or other) had failed in mine when I got it but there are all kinds of RF gain block ICs available with suitable built-in matching. One of these tucked away on a little piece of veroboard got it working again at almost no cost, Hurrah! By the way, if you want the colour bars to cover the whole frame that can be done by changing a link inside. In fact there are all kinds of things you can do, its worth getting the manual if you don't have one. |

I presume the modified regulator transistors were to allow for long running such as soak testing.

Re: An old friend. Philips PM5509
Thanks for the replies lads. Studio, yes it was only the smaller electrolytics I replaced, infact I've usually found these blue Philips electrolytics to be very reliable.
I would dearly like to get a copy of the manual, has anyone got one they could scan for me. Perhaps i should put a request in the wanted section. Cheers, John Joe. |

Hi John.
The user manual can be found at ElektoTanya https://elektrotanya.com/philips_pm5.../download.html but I assume you're really looking for the service manual. I have the service manual and there are about 87 pages to scan. I can scan this but I'm a little tied up with work and ongoing workshop rebuild. I'll try to get this done over the coming weeks. Regards Symon. |

That would be really great if you could Symon, there's certainly no rush this end. I hope your workshop rebuild is going well. I'm just at the tail end of my kitting out a new shed after a house move, however I find myself distracted by old sets when I should be finishing of my workshop!
Cheers, John Joe. |

Re: An old friend. Philips PM5509
Hi John.
Progress with the workshop is really slow at the moment due to being hampered by the wet weather. I am also building a garden storage unit from the decent reclaimed timber that came from my old workshop. There's never enough space for storing our old junk! I'll report back before long re the scans. Regards Symon |

Re: An old friend. Philips PM5509
Hi.
I have 2 or 3 PM5509s and I'm fairly sure I've got some spares in garage. Sometime back I scrapped one which had most parts serviceable including the meters. I'll have a look over the weekend. I like the Philips pattern generators, also in my collection are a PM5508, a PM5506 and a PM5519. Regards Symon |

Thanks for your help Symon. Yes it's amazing how a space naturally wants to be filled! The Philips test gear is really nice stuff, very ergonomic.

Re: An old friend. Philips PM5509
The attachment shows how the circle is generated. Pulses at field and line rate are supplied to double integrators (381 and 383 field) and (380 and 382 line)which in turn are supplied to a comparator.
No nasty programable devices employed in this instrument. Bullet proof TTL circuits are employed. DFWB. |

Re: An old friend. Philips PM5509
The PM5519 (I have one) seems to use the same method to generate the circle. It's simple and works well.
