That technique was used in a number of Redifon first-generation transistor-based military radios in the late-1950s/early-1960s. Alongside wire-ended "pencil" valves [Mullard Dx70-types] which were fitted into grommets and then tied to the circuit-board with lacing-cord round the grommet.

Early Philips radios used grommets through a metal chassis to mount the transistors.

The Decca TP22 and other Decca sets of that era also used the same method to mount the transistors.
