Malaysian Decca?
Hi all,
Whilst on holiday in Malaysia I noticed a 'Dekka' branded TV in our chalet in Malacca. Now 'Dekka' is the Malay spelling of 'Decca'. Malay words loaned from English use a form of phonetic spelling, of which 'kompleks' (from 'complex') is my favourite example. 'TV' is 'TV' of course, but 'television' becomes 'televisyen'. Anyway is it really supposed to be a 'Decca', since I don't see this brand in the UK anymore? Is it really a Tatung or something else? The TV is not very old. Generally TV sets in Malaysia are of Japanese, Korean or Chinese origin. Older (1970s) TV sets are Japanese in the American style. British brands are rare in Malaysia, although Morphy Richards is popular for kitchen appliences. Any ideas? Cheers Andy

I suspect that much of the Morphy Richards items will not be British, Glen Dimplex who own/ed M-R bought stuff from all over including China.

In Spain I fixed a 6 -year-old microwave branded 'Orbegozo', which was identical to a Morphy richards model. I even downloaded the English MR handbook for it!

Re: Malaysian Decca?
I've worked in Malaysia for 16 years now and have not seen the 'dekka' brand before, I expect it's made in China for a local importer who has just chosen the name. If it was really decca it would be spelt that way and follow the logo. There are quite a few local brand names as well as the Japanese and Koreans who assemble sets here and the Chinese imports.
We do have Kenwood here as well as the usual European kitchen goods at expensive prices. The spelling here is similar to English for some words as you say Andy, can anyone guess what 'bauchar' means? |

Re: Malaysian Decca?
When you say 'Kenwood' do you mean the Chinese kitchen appliance maker or the Japanese electronics manufacturer?

Okay, thanks!
I think Kenwood (Japan) were called "Trio" here and to confuse matters even more I believe they once made food-mixers under licence from the 'other' Kenwood for the Japanese market.

Re: Malaysian Decca?
Never thought they were different companies but they are. The small appliances maker however, seems to be an Italian owned British brand. They do probably make stuff in China as does everyone.

Re: Malaysian Decca?
I have read up on Kenwood a bit. Even though a British brand, they had massive production facilities in China before being acquired by DeLonghi so I shouldn't have dismissed the China connection so easily.

My Dad used to know Ken Wood who invented the planetary drive gearing mechanism as his wife was fed up scraping the bowl's contents into the centre. Can't think where the name came from....

Re: Malaysian Decca?
I fairly recently recycled two Kenwood hand mixers. Identical, except the older one was made in the UK, and the newer one China. Both failed in exactly the same way, stripped plastic gears, having fallen victim to a large Christmas Pudding. Unfortunately the gear is not available as a spare part, from either Kenwood or Decca!
