Funchal barber's shop surprise
Walking down Ilha Da Madeira I saw inside a barbers shop various items of interest. Barberia Dom Corleone was the name. The chap spoke little English but allowed me some pictures. Almost next door was the building with the aerials.

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
The aerials are on a building about 50 ft away, across a yard further down the street.

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
It's not a very clear picture, but if you look closely, the elements have traps, so it's most likely a tri-band amateur radio beam.

Checking on QRZ there are two amateurs listed for Ilha Da Madeira but neither appear to be particularly active (low lookup count). Mike |

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
More pictures. Yes, there are very thin traps on the beam. Nothing to do with the barbers shop. He says aerials were abandoned years ago.
One looking down the street and another from a parallel street. He doesn't know if any radios work either. The upside down desk is a proper barbers mirror and drawer unit. Rob

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
I should have said Traps not loading coils,I knew what I meant! Not good though as they can get moisture in them, mine were covered in self amalgamating tape I used.

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
More pics. He was delighted when I explained there were forum members worldwide and some comments already. He uses the radios etc. just as unusual ornaments to make his shop different.
I suppose you could say "a cut above the rest"! Rob

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
Yes. This was my second visit. I wasn't long inside the first time and the comment previously made did seem right looking at my original photo.
This time I had longer. The barber quite rightly asked his customer if it was ok for me take a picture. A bit further along the street there is a wire with 3 egg insulators attached to one building that then crosses the street to another building. It is not visible just where it terminates though. Rob

Interesting and The barbers desk, not “upside down ...” desk did lead to quite a long discussion.

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
one hears about all manner of stuff found inside radios being restored but I don't recall ever hearing human hair clippings mentioned.........maybe sometime in the future when someone takes on on of these.

Re: Funchal barber's shop surprise
Well, home again now. Visiting Câmara de Lobos one lunchtime, I couldn't resist trying to find an old electrical/radio/tv shop I went in several years ago. Then, there was an elderly owner and I assume his wife. Neither spoke English. I don't speak Portugese. It was like going back quite a few years in time. It was (and still is to my surprise) in the street from near the harbour cafes/bars up a slight hill via a narrow street to a church at the top. Sorry I don't have the name. It is on the left, about a third way up. It has 2 small windows with a door between. Peering inside, there are usb chargers, xmas lights etc. Then, a flat screen tv, looked about 4 or 5 years old, about 19inch screen priced at 95 euros! On the floor, several crt large plastic silver cabinet tvs FOR SALE! On a shelf above the counter, a bakelite style radio, nothing special, probably ac/dc. Opening time I saw was 1500-1900. Not convenient for me though. I tried taking pictures through the glass, but none worked out I am sorry to say.
Anyone visiting Madeira may care to look this place up and report back maybe? I have posted before (in museums) but there is a really good Museum of Electricity just a short walk from the cable car station in Funchal. Based at the old power station. Streetlights, generators, diesel engines, animated displays, switchgear, insulators etc. I think it closes 1230-1400 weekdays. Well worth a visit, and you receive a lovely metal pin badge as well. I have two now! 2 euros admission I think?? I spent well over an hour there. From their site: The Electricity Museum – “Casa da Luz” (“House of Light”) is in the old Power Station of Funchal which was disabled in 1989. The Museum displays a vast collection of machinery through 3 areas: the first area presents the early types of lighting that were used; the second area the development of electrification in the archipelago and; the third area refers to the various “energy sources”.
