A newly-acquired DC Avominor joins the collection, and I think this one is quite early - serial number 9712-24 - but I'm not sure how to interpret the date. It works well and is bang-on accurate.

Mike,

Thanks for your information. That's a fairly exotic collection, or are these just your most unusual meters? The Minor HR is one of the rarer types, possibly because it was released shortly before the Second World War and was rather specialised.

The later, full-size Avometer Type HR is also one of the less common types and your have one of each of the two more common types of HR.

James,

Thank you for your list. Your collection too has some of the more unusual types - is it a carefully chosen collection or have you just been fortunate in finding these types?

The small square meter sounds a bit like a Universal Minor but if it's something even more interesting, pleased let us know.

Phil,

Are you including Protometers in your Universal Minor sub-survey?

Hi Peter,

If I knew what a Protometer was, then yes, I would include it! Perhaps you'll elucidate in due course.

I have yet to find two identical Avometers, of any model, mark or type. Avometers are all unique, and one could be forgiven for concluding that Avo made only prototypes - in their millions!

Hi,
Its a combination of luck of what turns up and what takes my fancy. I try and get a couple of each meter so worst case i case make 1 good one.

I dont know if its of any use but I obtained a precision instruments 5v meter in a maple case the other day and looking at it last night I thought that the meter looks like one of the newer model 8 mk5 meters, the styling and symbols on it anyway. Was precision instruments a subsidiary of AVO?

Regards
James

It says avominor on it SN: 65272-1041

It measures 4" x 3" x 1.75"

It has voltages 6, 60 and 300v. I will add the picture up later when I can work out how to...

Today I was given AVO 8 MK1 complete with bakelite battery box cover and black spring loaded probe. The four binding posts are the same as an AVO 7.

The serial number is 5113-C-552.

AVO Multimeter, a way of life, I wasn't even allowed to touch them as a 15 year old apprentice, I was given a AVO minor, I remember being "meggered" on first day (gently), finally bought an ex MOD AVO 8 MKV over 25 years ago, not been used for 10 years, contrived replacement 15v battery from button cells, repaired a few dry joints, as good as ever, it is good to see the AVO working. No serial number on scale plate however, so no date.

Another Universal Avominor, serial number U.57043-443. This has the early pattern front panel, and the top range is 500 volts. It works, too!

Anyone would think that I don’t have enough already, as I still have another 20 Avo’s to repair from the batch of 30 that I bought.

Was the HR2 amongst the pile? If so, you seem to have found a gem! Well done.

I have been going through all of the serial numbers for the Avo's that I have, and cross checking my postings on the Forum, and it appears that I missed these out.

Avominor, S/N: U.21948-95?
Avominor, S/N: U.53560-143
Avominor, S/N: U.92460-746
Avominor, S/N: U.97706-1146

Another Universal Avominor, serial number U 23115-36. It is subtly different in appearance yet again from any early style I've seen previously, having no raised bosses surrounding the sockets.

Can anyone help date this example, please?
