Default BBC Pre-War TV service area map

I remember seeing somewhere, years ago, a service area map for the Pre-War Alexandra Palace TV transmitter. Phrases like 'First Class reception' and 'Fading may be experienced beyond 30 Miles' come to mind. Do I remember correctly? It is one of those items that would complete Peter Scott's excellent web-page on his HMV 901.

Does that help?? OK the image quality is appalling but you can make out some of the location names.

Here are two diagrams. One is based on an 'original' from an unknown ancient publication. The other is a simulation I carried out with the RadioMobile program.

There is a first class fold out 'R.M.A. Television Service Area Map' in the 1940 book 'Television To-Day and Tomorrow' [Moseley/Chapple.] Unfortunately it is too large to scan. John.

Here's the map accompanying an article on television sales prospects in the 1937 Broadcaster Trade Annual.

OK Steve, I'm a sucker for flattery. I'll see if I can squeeze a map in.

I've stolen nice material from Panrock in the past and he didn't take me to court. Maybe I'll chance my arm again.

Panrock is now getting so long-in-the-tooth that surely all his stuff must be classified as 'vintage'; thus copying is permitted according to the forum's guideline on scanning publications HERE.

If it's too large to scan, you can get reasonable results by taking a high definition digital photograph of the map. Any half decent recent digicam should do.

Peter,

I'm glad you took the hint and added a service area/field strength map to your now even more excellent web-page!! Now we can get a feel for the potential range of Ally Pally viewing.

Many Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

No problem and thanks for the suggestion.
I rather like Panrock's map.
