Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
Likewise had a great day- doesn't time fly when you're having fun!
Didn't get the Stella TV going (Duff LOPTX ) but nice to meet up with you all. Big thanks to Sean and co for arranging the day. Greg

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
I got back home about 15 minutes ago after a great day. I didn't take anything to repair myself but was able to help with a few other people's repairs and generally mingle and chat. An excellent well organised event, every bit as good as the previous one.
Attached is a couple of images of Callum (Sean's son) wearing a military 2 way radio which he took across the field while Sean remained inside the hall and in communication. |

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
Glad to hear everyone made it home safely.
Nice to see the usual rabble and Mick who came down from Loughborough. Despite my late appearance, seeing a few old sets coming back to life made it worthwhile. Thankyou for all the kind comments on the amplifier, sorry if I made a nuisance, it was the first proper chance to try it and the new speakers out. Again an excellent event, thankyou very much to Sean and family for the hospitality, and Chris for the venue and finding a heftier mains transformer for the amp. Rob.

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
A great day out, two record players serviced,
First was Murphy record player A316 I replaced the valve holder and a few caps and resistors and it sounded brilliant. The Collaro record player had been serviced on an earlier occasion. I also serviced a lovely Dynatron record player with a Collaro studio turntable. This was untouched until the workshop, I replaced those horrible Hunts and Visconol capacitors. The record deck needed a drop of oil here and there but otherwise worked well. It needs a new cartridge which I'll get from Musonic on Tuesday/Wednesday. The Philips style 70 got its replacement CRT but needs a lot of work done on it. All in all a great day out and nice to see our friends on the Forum. |

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
The great thing is that while not everything that arrived broken left fully working, in many cases the owner who was previously stuck with the repair had his specific problems resolved and knew the way forward. I think this chance to get other opinions on problems from people who can actually look at the set with you and give advice and encouragement is probably the most valuable aspect of days like this. Plus of course a good opportunity to chat and socialise with other like-minded people.

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
Hi All
Most enjoyable to see you all and get a custard Danish before they all disappeared. Hacker SII has a new volume - on/off switch to replace the dis-functional one it arrived with. A Ferguson Model 461 is working well with a little more work to do. Thanks to Sean for a nifty repair on the ef39 screen. That grid cap changed to remove the +12V on the grid. More than enough output from what I thought was a EL33 but might be an AL33 according to other sources, I'll double check. A little Polish Figaro which, by a unanimous decision from the experts was the worst one ever made. this now has improved performance thanks to a phantom expert without my knowledge tweaking it. It has a interesting mute control when the 606 sig gen earth is connected to a safe block but not switched on (the 606 that is). A Hz switch change on a PRC320 man-pack similar to that carried by Callum in the pic., quite time consuming. Thanks to Rob & Phil for checking out the 606 sig gen. I'll start collecting for the next workshop as I've nearly depleted my jobs in hand. And even if not too complicated or exciting I actually finish something! Looking forward to the next one. Thanks Onewatt

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
Another really excellent day, thanks to Sean and Chris for the organising. Also a big thanks to Paul for looking at my radios.
I took along three sets, an Ekco A28 which received and had slight volume but wouldn't get any louder. The volume knob was also acting as a tone control. This one had me flummoxed at home. Paul traced the circuit through and eventually found the screened lead to the top cap of the detector (EBC33) was short circuit. This was replaced and now the Ekco is working very well and it's very loud. Second set was a Murphy A168 which I'd had no luck in making work, assumed was a dead 'un, had given up on and had been practicing re-stuffing caps on. The fault on this one, Paul found, was that the octal output valve had had its spigot broken off and had been replaced incorrectly. I'd not pulled the valves on this set so wouldn't have worked that one out! All valuable experience. Some piccies attached. Andrew

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
Did anyone notice if a volume of 'Radio & TV Servicing' was left behind on Sunday, as I seem to have returned without it?
It was 1960/61 edition and had brightly coloured strips of 'post-it' notes sticking from the top that were in there as book marks! If someone has kindly rescued it, could you let me know? Thanks, Greg

Re: Workshop #2 Cottered
Unfortunately I was unable to attend due to matters beyond my control, I do hope to make it to the next one and I am pleased to see that this one went well.
I will be in touch with those I was supposed to be collecting items from a.s.a.p. All the best, Brian |
