Default The Music Box.

As a young lad I used to laugh at the antics of Laurel and Hardy but never appreciated the real comedy of the famous pair, something that can only occur when you have experienced some of the scenarios in life that actually match their disasters.

There is a scene in 'The Music Box' involving a consolette radio. Oliver manages to trample his big foot into the 'works' destroying the valves and probably more!

I spent a few moments edging through the frames to discover it was a full working radio that was destroyed. The stills show the internals moments before his foot crushed the works. Bits of glass from the imploding valves can clearly be seen.

The smoke was obviously added for the last shot.

Any idea about the make or model? The film was made in 1932 and I guess the radio was quite new. I'm amazed they did not use a prop.

A mate of mine visited the U.S. about 20 years ago and tells me the steps were still exactly the same with little change to the area. Regards, John.

I guess given the amount they were likely to be paying the actors, the cost of a radio was considered trivial.

Also remember that they would probably have been able to offset the cost of the props against their tax-bill so essentially the cost would become zero. Plenty of movies are negatively-profitable!

In this L&H film the pair put up an aerial, and I do mean an aerial, not an antenna.
