Old stenorette
Hi everybody, I have just join this forum.
I've hald repaired a couple reels (I'll probably ask about them in the future): a Geloso G257 that is now working with some noises, etc and a spanish Ingra, this working better. Those were tube units, now my probles is this Grundig Stenorette TS (I bought it years ago thinking it was tubes, too). I just know practically nothing about it. I can figure out the keyboard, but there are 4 wheels (pots), one with 3 positions and the other 3 continuous. The unit can rewind, but the forward, play (telephone?) and record keys don't engage. Do you know something 'bout it ? Schematics, manual ? Thanks you so much. By the way, my name is Jose and I am in Spain. http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/mr.whiz/FOROS/1.jpg http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/mr.whiz/FOROS/2.jpg http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/mr.whiz/FOROS/3.jpg http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/mr.whiz/FOROS/4.jpg http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/mr.whiz/FOROS/5.jpg |

Re: Old stenorette
Hi,
As far as I am aware, the Grundig Stenorette range of machines were dictating machines - information would be recorded on them for transcription by a secretary at a later time. The microphone would be connected during recording (of course!) and a "Stethoscope" headset would be connected during playback/transcribing, the unit being started and stopped by a foot pedal. Looking at your unit the socket marked Mikro would be for the microphone, this may have also included a switch for Stop/Start and possibly other transport functions. The 'Fernbed' socket would be for the foot control and the 'Tel.AD' socket for the "Stethoset" headset. The transport keys may not engage without the foot pedal being connected as they may be solenoid controlled. Hope this helps Regards Andrew |

Re: Old stenorette
Yes, thank you. I was thinking about something like that. There are some solenoids inside.
Any info. about the socket's pins so I can bridge the remote control pins ? |

Re: Old stenorette
Hello Jose,
Have you got the microphone for it to start with, without this the machine will not function correctly as the stop / start is on the mic. itself, also the record button is on the mic. controlling this function . The three step pot. is for sensitivity of the mic, close work, conference etc. Mechanically the cassette can be controlled forwards/backwards by the push buttons. The tel. adaptor is for use with an adpaptor fixed , usually by suction cup to the older type telephones. The RCF foot control would fit into the DIN connector at the rear of machine, this is normally for transcription purposes by the typist & enabled her to backspace & stop/start the machine with her foot ( a handset for similar use was also available) Her headset would be inserted into the micro socket to be used for transcription . As it is now somewhat elderly & with little use for some years you may find it a little problematic . Cheers. Colin |

Re: Old stenorette
I have a later model Stenorette SL. It has the same type of connector for the microphone (which does have a pause / start switch on the handset). I've not tried working out what each of the pins do...
I picked up mine for £15. Because these machines are only dictation quality, and unsuitable for music, they don't go for much money, unless you find a Grundig collector who needs your model. Mine seems to be a common machine. This link is a useful history of Grundig dictation machines. It may mention your model: http://www.grundig-gbs.com/en/history?Itemid=1251 Cheers! |

Re: Old stenorette
SL similar machine, smaller & a little less robust , mike different model but with same controls, after that model alas in my opinion they went down.
If ever you get stuck contact me, still have some spares left & a few accessories . Cheers. Colin |

Re: Old stenorette
So, I need the right mic with the right connection just to try it.
Maybe I can figure out the right pins for the remote control to make it play but... I think it doesn't have a speaker either, maybe the mic acts as a spkr too? I think I read that somewhere. Well, I'll see what I do, thanks everybody for your answers. |

Re: Old stenorette
The mic does act as the speaker too. Can't remember if the speaker is the mic, but they sit in the same handset.

Re: Old stenorette
I remember my father using one of these to dictate reports whilst working from home in the early 1960s. The audio quality was relatively poor, and also the machine doesn't have a capstan. The take-up spool is driven at constant speed by the motor which, from memory, develops enormous torque.
Good luck in getting it operating!

Re: Old stenorette
A coincidence - just returned from the local fleamarket with ten 'steno-cassette 30' tapes! As from about 1972, these seemingly succeeded the reel-to-reel type quarter inch units used in the deck above, and are similar to microcassettes. the tape seems a bit smaller than standard audio cassettes. now I need a stenorette 2002 to play them on....

Re: Old stenorette
Somewhere amongst a whole heap of service manuals & schematics in my workshop, I'm almost certain there are some for Grundig Stenorettes, but I don't know which model(s) they cover. I'll have a look and see if there's a manual for a TS amongst them, Jose, as it may help you get yours working. (Don't have any spares for them, though!)
