Default 22" Ferguson 3500

I can remember 22" Ultra Bermuda , HMV Colourmaster , Alba and Marconiphone versions of the BRC3500 but not a Ferguson Colourstar. Does anyone know why this was ?

Regards Gary.

Hi Gary,
That's right I can't remember there ever being a Ferguson 22" 3500 chassis model.
Sure enough Thorn marketed HMV, Marconi and Ultra models but no Ferguson model.
In 1975 I started to take deliveries of TVs direct from Thorn Consumer Electronics and by that time the 22" models were fitted with that cheap to make 8800 chassis. The HMV version had the best cabinet presentation, real teak veneer. The others were housed in cabinets constructed of chip board covered with a kind of Fablon. Real rubbish!

Hi Gary,
Mazda made a 22" CRT type A55-14X which was not fully square cornered like the A56-120X. The Mazda tube was designed to suit the 3000 chassis which did not employ a transductor for raster correction. The later 3500 chassis did have a transductor but the later sets continued to have the tube mounted upside down.

Well, I've got a 3500 set here with a 22 Inch tube!

The 3500 was a development of the 3000, with a different colour convergence board. This is because the 3500 used the newer tubes with the more rectangular picture.

The 3000 series used the 10AX series. The 3500 used the 30AX (I think!).

Of course they both had the switch mode PSU, which people loved or hated.

Cheers,

Steve P.

Hi Steve

My HMV 3500 uses a 22 tube and in the past i've had an Ultra with a 22 tube. Today while looking at some of my old BRC books they don't list a Ferguson 3500 that used a 22" tube; is your 3500 with a 22 inch CRT a Ferguson? If so I guess it could be a rare set

Marcus.

Hi Steve

Gary's thread was asking if there ever was a Ferguson 3500 that used a 22 inch crt; I've looked in all my old BRC books and they only list models with 26 inch CRT.

Oh, OK. I'll have a look among my stocks here, but I don't think so.

I am sure there was 22" 3500's, I seem to remember repairing many of these. They came in many different guises drom wooden cabinet HMV's to the normal plastic cabinet affairs wearing Marconiphone, Ultra and Ferguson badges. At Radio Rentals we were awash with them, with many different Baird models available for the customer. I believe there was one Baird 22" 3500 model which had the more attractive wooden or chipboard cabinet.

Hi
Oddly I'm with Marcus on this!! For some reason BRC seemed to leave Ferguson with the large-screen (26" - the 25" were 3000s, as he says) sets - one with four funny flappy manual channel selectors, one similar with six varicap buttons and a traditional style cabinet with doors which had a four-button tuner (manual). HMV had a nice looking 22" version and the others more conventional sets, but I don't recall a Ferguson other than the funny A55-14X one. We wait with bated breath, Steve!!
The A56-120X and A66-120X were used in the 3500 series as they needed pincushion correction. Mind you, anyone who's seen any Thorn 25" set will argue that they did too!
