This just goes to show what can be achieved with a little lateral thinking and the high skill levels to be found on this forum.

Keep up the good work.

Well I got some from Ebay, just had a look and they are still there but price has gone up a bit, a search on Ferrite cores will find them, but you can get any standard size cores from http://www.surplussales.com/index.html
this is a great firm with lots of hard to find items like airspaced coil stock etc
the cores are where the coil formers are, the site is well worth a browse

Jim, if they are the same cores as the ones I got then you will find they are slightly oversize, the ad says 6mm but mine were 6.13mm this makes them a very tight fit into an M6 thread, so I drilled out to 6mm and then put an M7 thread in, this makes a really nice fit, also they are hollow so not a lot of meat there, I found if I needed a bit more core its easy to cement a smaller core inside or extend it with a bit of thin ferrite rod, from Ron...

I just found this site for people like me who neither have the superb skill that Ron possesses (not to mention patience I imagine). http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/.../IF_Can-1.html.
Fantastic job Ron.

Excellent idea!! I wonder if it would work at say 1.6mhz with something like a 100uh choke and 100pf trimmer

I guess the beauty of this idea is that you can effectively choose your own IF frequency with the chokes that are available. I read somewhere (I think it was possibly PW) that you can homebrew chokes by winding loads of turns onto say a 2M ohm 1 watt resistor. I guess a larger, say 2 or 3 watt if you need more room for turns. Just need to find a source of reasonably priced non-inductive high value high wattage resistors!
