Default Just picked up a Pye D18T, any tips?

Hi Guys,

Well I was at the Alcester street fayre today which had an obvious 1940's theme due to being so close to the D-Day anniversary and I picked up a Pye D18T which even though the cabinet needs refinishing, doesnt have any worm or splits etc.

I took the back off and everything looks untouched with a PL38M sitting in its correct position and all the rather red EF50's staring at me.

There is a good layer of dust on everything and the tube is dated 14th April 1949.

I can't find the tube number yet though.

it has a brown mains lead with old black and red inners so I am guessing original flex.

The antenna sockets are still intact and no coax has been fitted.

All in all, without removing the chassis, it looks a very honest little set.

I paid a grand total of £30 for it at the end of the day as everyone thought it was a prop for the stall and not actually for sale.

These are a great little set, I restored mine over a year ago and use it regularly.
A pretty easy set to restore, if a bit fiddly in places
Your tube should be ok, but will probably have a bit of ion burn. On my set it faded a lot once the tube had seen a few hours use, an gives an excellent picture.
I have two LV20's to restore, basicly the same set but in a table top cabinet.

As they say on Blue Peter, 'here's one I did earlier'....

That's quite a tidy set for its age, some of those I serviced in the '50s didn't look as nice as that. Hope you have fun and get good results from restoring it.

Well I applied power and.......

Nothing, nada, zero, no heaters or nothing so I am guessing the power switch to be at fault or maybe a faulty valve as I think from what I have read that the heaters are all in series on this set..

Well I didn't want to dusturb the EF50's due to the delicate sockets

And its most likely to be the heater pins on an EF50 that's causing the problem. Watch out for the insulated cap on the PL38M they can be very tight and sometimes pull the top of the valve off.

Upon closer inspection, it looks like the LOPT has shed some of it's pitch and has dripped down around the top of the chassis and around the PL33 valve base. Is this normal or should I be worried?

It does happen with pitch covered transformers and doesn't necessarily mean anything except that its got hot sometime, I dare say you will find out during restoration.

If you are not aware, there should be a link on the back cover, so when the back is removed no power will reach the set. Just jump it over to get continuity.

Yeah the link is in place

Well I guess my luck has bolted right from the start. The tube has O/C Heaters :-(

The heater pins are either side of the keyway. What a stinker! Very unusual with the Mullard 9" tubes. J.

Yeah, the 2 black wires.. I tried the connector without the tube and got a reading from the remainder of the heater chain but the tube is deffinately OC :-(

Good morning,
You could try the high voltage method to try and weld the 2 ends of the filament together. From the top cap to chassis of a line output valve I think.
I did this with a o/c heater in a near unobtainable PENDD4021 in a Murphy set. It worked but diddnt last very long though. It was enough to prove the radio was ok.

It is worth a shot at carefully removing the tube base and rechecking the filament, or if the base is stuck solid, try resoldering the heater pins.
It may just work, as it is you have nothing to lose, so worth a try.

Hi Chris, That may be an option. but being a TV I pretty much know without changing 50+ caps it's not gonna be ok haha.

Mark, it's a Loctal base, I think the pins are part of the glass moulding with just a base on to hold them firm. Same pins as an EF50.

Maybe it is trivial, but are you 100% certain that the filament wires are properly soldered inside the CRT socket?

I metered the CRT with the socket removed.

Blast, that is a shame.
As mentioned already, it is very possible sometimes to effect a repair to the heater. There were a couple of articles in the Practical television describing the procedure.
