What about the heads from disc drives? They record at densities that must be way beyond audio to cram the data they do onto a couple of platters, and this was 15 years ago.

I suspect that for digital they are designed to work in a narrower range of (high) frequencies and so wouldnt work well for analog which requires heads able to be reasonably linear across the full audio spectrum.

It's well known that the width of the gap in a tape head sets the high frequency roll-off characteristic. Less well known, the total length of the pole pieces in magnetic contact with the tape sets a low-frequency roll-off.

Heads for recording data also don't need to be particularly linear.

narrow track-width to squeeze in thousands of tracks on a platter is more important than very high signal to noise ratio.

I think the design of disc drive heads has diverged a long way from audio heads.

However, some of the technology employed to make them could make for some rather interesting possibilities in audio heads.
