Default BVWS Harpenden 22nd Sept. auction/swap-meet

So now that the warm summer is fading in to the past and the darker nights are rolling in, why not stock up the workshop with some projects to keep you occupied for those long autumn/winter evenings?

Yes, it's Harpenden Swap Meet and Auction on Sunday 22nd September.

Doors open 9.30am, (stallholders 9.00am) £5 entry on the door.
Auction to start about 1pm, with approx. 300 lots!

With many stalls, the Bring & Buy table, you will find a huge selection of vintage goodies, including radio, TV, audio/hifi, communications, spares, valves, test gear, service manuals, ephemera, books and much more!

Plus the BVWS table with all the Capacitor values that you need for vintage gear, plus Deoxit, Bulletin back issues and publications/DVD's.

ALL ARE WELCOME, if you're not a member, you can come in as a guest and see what we're all about! You can even take the plunge and join on the day (You'll need to be a member to bid in the auction) Debit/Credit card payments taken for memberships, auction and BVWS stall items.

Just a reminder about how the Bring & Buy works at Harpenden.

We are no longer in the foyer but inside the hall itself, probably on the banked seating area at the back. You can still leave stuff with us during setting up as we'll have a booking-in table in one of the doors to the main hall.

There are 2 ways to sell stuff on the B&B.

1: Donation with 100% of proceeds going to the Vintage Wireless Museum. No need for admin for labels, lists etc and the museum takes all the proceeds.

2: Sales with 10% commission to the Museum. If you have more than a couple of items it helps us a lot if you can make a numbered list with prices. With corresponding numbered price labels stuck on the items. We then add a serial letter (eg your No 3 becomes C3). We can do labeling/listing on the day but it really slows things down for everyone at busy times. Please use the attached listing sheet, to help us.

We close the B&B when the auction starts (approx 1pm) but if you've sold anything you can collect the proceeds at any time. Please remember to collect unsold items well before the auction starts. Unsold donated items are sold off or given away at the end, but do collect if you can!

You've all been fabulously generous in the past, often raising £400 or more on theday, so let's hope for another big donation to the Museum this time.

See you all on the 22nd.

The auction catalogue is now available on the BVWS website and is attached to this post.

There will be at least another 30 lots coming on the day, but we don't know exactly what they are yet. It depends on what the sellers are able to transport.

EDIT: Updated copy in post #9 so attachment here removed.

Many thanks for the catalogue. Quite a lot of interesting things there.

Looks like the “f” key was a bit intermittent when the catalogue was written

Something very weird has happened in making it into a PDF.

All of the F's and the I's and L's are there in the source excel file.

Strange. Please send me the Excel file again Mike and I'll have another go. It's normally fine.

Hi All,

I have been informed by the owner of LOT 193 'Ekco model PB179' that he cannot find the Bakelite cover that houses the station names alongside the push buttons.
He knows he has this somewhere so to avoid problems he has substituted a Marconi 6 valve transportable AC Receiver(think 279) instead.

The Ekco PB179 will probably appear at RWB in December instead.

If you have printed your catalogue please make a note of this.

Thanks,

Mike...

The Bring and Buy raised over £500 for the Dulwich Wireless and Television Museum today. A very good result and much appreciated. A lot of the funds raised come from donations, so thank you particularly to all the very generous donors.

I was very glad Lot 193 was changed, as I went home with the Marconi transportable, and a beauty it is. It also appears to have been restored and working, as I will know when I have charged up a 2v accumulator. Some exceptional bargains and thanks (again) to Mike and all the dedicated team.

My mate Jon and I had a good day, we bought quite a few bargains. Jon has filled a few gaps in his collection of Pye radio sets. I bought a nice Pye radiogram for not a lot . The main reason I wanted it was because it was fitted with a Garrard Sp25 which alone was worth the price! However when we got it home we found it had been fully restored so much too good to break! I swapped the deck for one more suited to the grams age and it went home with Jon...
I also bought the GEC colour set after I had decided I didn't want it but I was the only bidder and I could see Mike's hammer being raised... I have hidden that in my parents garage until a suitable time can be found to sneak it in at home.. How I am going to sneak a large wooden colour set upstairs to my workshop I have not quite worked out...
Thanks to all.. I realise all the work that goes in behind the scenes !

Rich.

I see even when that BO tv was offered as free, there were still no takers!

From another stall I bought a very nice Marconi output power meter

I really fancied the Murphy A76 but alas I couldn't stay for the auction due to having to go to work. I still bought two nice sets from the stalls, so I went home a happy man.

My notes say that the Pye service rack fetched £25. I saw another one at, I think, Princethorpe in August.

Rich, you have my sympathy re sneaking home big sets. As a young teenager I discovered the repair shop on the way home from school would give me sets left and not collected ... sometimes they worked (I was not very good at repair myself, and not a lot better now) ... but they had to come home on the bus, I had to stagger from the bus stop to our house, and then had to bend double and sneak past the kitchen window to my shed ... if my mum saw me there would be sanctions! Where does this compulsion come from?
