Hythe/Southampton
Help wanted, please. I've another thread running concerning specific BEME radio equipment.
However, I think that the old factory's location in Hythe, nr Southamption might be the strongest link to info. Do any local Forum Members have an inkling of where this factory was exactly? Prahaps they were taken over by a much larger company - Plessey, Marconi, Ferranti, etc ? They were known as Electronic & Marine Equipment Ltd, then changed to BEME Telecommunications Ltd. Is there a local archive of old businesses ? Regards, David |

Re: Hythe/Southampton
No Andrew, I didn't. Thanks. I knew of an office address in London, but the two D/F Rx's I know about just had Hythe, Southampton stamped on their labels.
That Shipyard Estate number just has four digits. A 50's/60's number I'm guessing. But certainly another interesting piece of gen. Regards, David |

Re: Hythe/Southampton
If it's the same as Thermionic Products, who were in Hythe, Southampton, I think I have their old address.

Re: Hythe/Southampton
Hello kalee20,
I've never heard of Thermionic Products, but again it might be a lead, thanks. The original name "Electronic & Marine Equipment" with a prefix "B" form - - BEME. So who or what was "B" ? Regards, David |

Re: Hythe/Southampton
David, yes the phone number is from an advert in 1960. I believe Thermionic Products were bought by Racal, becoming Racal-Thermionics, before 1960.

Re: Hythe/Southampton
Well, the net has trawled in a few interesting fishes.
Radiomuseum(should've thought of them sooner) have some info on Beme's earlier DF sets. And a chap called PETE RICH also has a page. He has a couple of early BL's. Does anyone know his contact details ? He's not in the BVWS or VMARS Handbooks. Regards, David |

Re: Hythe/Southampton
Belay that last Pipe, as the Navy would've said.
I've managed to locate Pete Rich(G4 DYG), and have had a nice long blether over the phone. A really nice guy & a nice collection of vintage radios. Including a BEME BL50A & a BL55A. But like myself, reached a brick wall with just the Hythe address. Nothing else. They seemingly had an R&D arm - BEME Research & Developement Ltd, based at their London office - 24 Upper Brook Street, Mayfair. But recent directories just list swanky restaurants, clubs, & embassies. The quest continues. Regards, David |
