Panasonic DMR-ES30V PSU problems
I have been given this VCR/DVD recorder, apparently it was in working order when last used a few years ago.
When powered up I get the clock display no problem, but switching the unit on it responds normally for about 30 seconds, then dies completely, including the clock display. Unplugging for a few minutes and the clock comes on, and will stay on until the unit is switched on, then it dies again. I guess this is possibly bad caps on the PSU. Has anyone dealt with one of these, I would be grateful for any advice. Mark |

Re: Panasonic DMR-ES30V PSU problems
I had the same problem on mine. It was bad caps on the psu board, quite a few of them were proper bulged and discoloured on the tops.

Re: Panasonic DMR-ES30V PSU problems
In the case of my machine, it was only one 640uF 10v cap needing replacement.
The fun was stripping the thing down to remove the board itself, both the front & rear panel has to come off, the DVD drive, then the drive mounting plate, daughter board, and four link plugs, several screws, cables to the fan & DVD drive before the board could be withdrawn The culprit was easy to spot, as the top was domed. Going through the rest with my ESR meter proved them to be OK. I was surprised to find the Caps were not Panasonic, but some dubious RJX branded items. I found a date of 2005 on the loading motor. Judging by the internal condition, it appears to have had very little use in it's life. After reassembly, the machine is now working perfectly & with the ability to record from VHS to DVD & vice versa, it should be useful addition to the hoard! Mark P.S. if anyone has a remote for this machine, please let me know. |

I might have a spare remote. I'll have a look and let you know.

Re: Panasonic DMR-ES30V PSU problems
Many thanks Snarf,
It would certainly be handy as most of the functions are on the remote. I managed to find a PDF of the user manual, will have a read when I get a minute. I am glad it was an easy fix, just wish it had been easier to access the print side of the board. I also got my Panasonic NV-HD680 fixed today, just a dirty mode switch Mark |

Re: Panasonic DMR-ES30V PSU problems
I repaired mine by snipping off the defective cap and neatly soldering the new one to its leadouts.

Re: Panasonic DMR-ES30V PSU problems
Use a 680uF in place of 640uF and slightly higher working voltage (Low ESR Type)

Re: Panasonic DMR-ES30V PSU problems
Panasonic do seem to use a few ‘non Panasonic’ capacitors and they always seem to cause trouble. Glad you got it sorted. Be aware that if the DVD drive fails its generally renders the machine beyond economic repair.

The DVD drive is working fine at the moment, the machine appears to be a low hours unit, so hopefully will have plenty of life left in it yet! Many thanks to Richard for sorting out a remote for it, very much appreciated. Photos show what great condition it is in, and the faulty cap. Mark |
