Default Elizabethan Astronaut Record Player parts

Hi all

I've got a vintage Elizabethan Astronaut record player which is missing a stylus/cartridge. I asked my local record store shop and they suggested to ask on a forum for the parts as it's too old for them to supply the stylus and cartridge.

It'd be very helpful if someone can recommend someone/supply these parts. I have pictures if needed.

Thanks

Yara

Do you mean the Stylus or the Cartridge? They are different things. The cartridge is likely to be a BSR type.

Ideally we need pictures or the deck.

Also does it a valve or transistor amplifier? If the former, what valves are fitted? This may dictate the type of cartridge required.

Another sparsely documented record player from a very well known brand. It's definitely transistorised, most likely with a BSR cartridge, but which one?

I have one, it uses a BSR X5M .
I like the look of it, it's a very space age 1970's design. Unfortunately it has a bit of a weedy amplifier feeding a small speaker so not a brilliant sound or much room filling volume... One note Bass and not much of it, so a pretty hopeless thing to listen to, but nice to look at. Most youngsters say it looks "kewl"

Hi again

I think I need a stylus and a cartridge. I’ve attached photos.. I just want it to work really, we’ve picked it up from our bin room with a note saying it is fully working.

Thanks

Yara

Difficult to tell, due to lack of contrast, but it looks like the cartridge is present and the stylus is missing. I can't see whether the cartridge is connected to the wires going to the amplifier.

I can take clearer photos if it helps, how can I tell if the cartridge is connected to the wires going to the amplifier? Just let me know what you need to see more clearly

See those plastic sleeves close to the cartridge? Inside them are metal push-on connectors. These should be pushed onto the pins on the back of the cartridge. Wires from the connectors carry the signal to the amplifier.

There are four wires in the arm but being mono only two are used. The ones you can see are probably the unused ones.

The easiest way to tell if the cartridge is connected and functional is to switch it on turn up the volume and carefully stroke the little rubber bridge that the stylus normally sits on if you have sound then all you need is a stylus...

Agreed. A careful look shows two more wires which appear to be connected to the cartridge pins.

Hi, if this is the case a BSR ST8 or ST12 stylus should be OK for use with his cartridge which is a BSR X5H(M?)

A Google search or a check on the likes of eBay should bring up plenty of suppliers.

Regards

Andrew

This cart is clearly an X5M, so you can use ST12 or ST14 (if you have 78 rpm shellac gramophone records, these have one tip for them plus one tip for vinyl) or ST15 (if you just have vinyl - this has two tips suitable for it). You could also use a single tip ST19.

Let us know if the above doesn't make sense and we can advise.

These styli are to be found online for under a tenner.

I've done that and it did make a sound. It must be working then.
