Default Ultra Lynx Console “LW” Coils Help

Hi all,

I’ve recently picked up an Ultra Lynx condole radio from the early 30s. The radio it self appears to of had some work done on it in the past. A replacement speaker and HT choke to replace the field coil.

I managed to get the radio to play quite well, but for some reason I wasn’t getting any long wave reception. After taking a look at the diagram I started looking at what’s referred to as the “LW” coils. Specifically the one that had my attention on was the one connected to V1. There’s two of them. To cut a long story short, after removing both coils I soon realised that they had quite literally fallen apart in my hands. I couldn’t get long wave as one of the wires on that coil had broken off it’s tag, and whilst inspecting the other one... well that was loose on its core and shortly after noticing that, the fine wires all broke off.

I’m now in a position where the coil pictured on the left connected to V1 isn’t making continuity, and the coil on the right has a missing 3rd wire which I cannot find!

I noticed that both coils are wound in a zigzag, could this be easily rewound? If not, what would be a good replacement for both?

Thanks.

If you have continuity across the loose ends of wire then carefully clean the ends, tin them with solder and re-solder to the tags. Unless somebody has a scrap set you're unlikely to find exact replacements and although technically it would be possible to rewind them I wouldn't recommend attempting it yourself as the results are likely to be disappointing. As a last resort you would probably be able to adapt LW coils from another set but these would need to match the value of the tuning capacitor. Cheers, Jerry
