Default Antenna Amplifier for Portable Tv.

Hi,

I'm looking for a small Aerial Amplifier (5 volt would be nice) for use with a
Portable Tv.

Can anybody help with pointing me in the direction of a commercial ready built product,
or a suitable Circuit I could build?

All I can find on Ebay, are Amplifiers which are to big, for use at Home, or smaller ones
built into Portable Antenna's.

I don't really want to cut up a perfectly good Antenna's, or the associated cost.

I don't need or indeed want an Antenna, I need only to amplify the Antenna I have already.

I take it you have a portable TV with its own indoor aerial.

Amplifiers are designed to go at the start of a long run of coax to overcome the losses in said coax.

If you don't have a long run an amplifier is a waste of time, money, and electrical energy. All it will do is amplify the local noise giving louder noise. It won't improve the signal to noise ratio which is what you want.

Portable aerials with them in are a con, one of many cons that have appeared in the cheap aerial market for decades.

The low end one-4-all unit's run on 6V so may run just fine (with a slightly reduced amount of gain I would assume) on 5V.

Slightly smaller (in width and possibly height) than a deck of cards though possibly slightly deeper (1cm at most).

There are also the circular Philex unit's that are no wider than a mini-cd, but they run on 12V.

Both are supplied in static caravans at work and seem to work just fine, though there use is more for signal distribution than actual amplification.

But you would be buying a PHILEX product. Frankly I would rather go without. They bought the Labgear brand to disguise what the public had become wise to. I had a number of conversations with the MD about quality, but it was always a case of "Never mind the quality, feel the width".

Yep, fully understand and agree with your statements.

The problem I am having, appears to be a Levels problem,
not a S/N problem.
The receiver might just be a bit Deaf.

Hence the need for an amplifier.

Thanks for the links, but they are all far to big for this project.
I need something much smaller.

No idea if this suitable for your purpose but its small and cheap, and runs from 5V.

If you do a search for ultra low noise LNA you will get hundreds of hits.

Cheers
