This is the speed controller I mention in the last post, bought from e-bay, advertised as 4kW (resistive load) so should be OK for a 1.8kW motor.

Excellent result and very thoughtfully implemented. Hopefully one or two others might be inspired to attempt something similar. The vacuum approach is definitely to be recomended in my view.
