Default Wanted - Line oscillator coil for GEC Junior Fineline model 2114

I know its a bit of a long shot, but I managed to snap the former and break both windings of this coil.

If anyone has a spare, I would very much like to buy it from you. Of course I am happy to cover P&P as well.

The coil in question is L201 from the above set. Hopefully a picture should e attached to this post.

Many thanks.

Ed dinning may be able to help if another former can be found, doesn't look terribly complicated.

Hi, the main problem may be the repair of, or finding a new former

Thanks for the replies. I can possibly repair the former.

I tried to solder the windings back together, but this resulted in an unstable picture, I assume this has to be pretty precise to function correctly.

I'd think that GEC used the same coil in all versions on the chassis, manufacturers usually did. That may widen the search. Also, it's possible that the dual standard one may be usable.

I'm not sure this would be the case, this set was, I believe the first all transistor offering by G.E.C. I imagine this would have been an entirely new chassis. But could be wrong of course.

Ah. No dual standard version then.

The same circuit is used in the Thorn 1590, with identical oscillator coil L14.

Here are two photos of the line oscillator coil used in the Thorn 159/1591 chassis.

Of course, the resistances of the sections and their pinouts may be different.

Resistances: 2.5 + 7.1 Ohms approximately.

Hi GM, it appears not to be wavewound, so that should make a rewind easier and it may also be possible to get a similar former.
Has anyone an inductance value for this coil

Thanks all for the help so far.

Dazzlevision, That certainly looks like the beast and the pinout appears the same. I will see if I can measure resistance of what is left of mine.

Ed, I cannot find an inductance value for the coils in any of the data I have for the set, and a google search did not draw any more details. I have other spare formers here, with slugs, but they are not the same, However, I have no problem with making up a small daughter board to sit a physically different former on as long as it is the correct value and will work. I have access to required equipment to do this in the lab at work. Could be a nice little lunch time project. But I guess this is a none starter without knowing the correct values.

Dazzlevision, I know its a bit cheeky, but is that coil in your photographs going spare, and would you like to exchange it for a few beer tokens?

It might be, but Iíll need to check if I have two, as itís part of a set of chassis-specific parts for my Thorn 1590 chassis portable mono TV.

Iíll get back to you.

Hi GM, if you analyse the circuit you will find what is a possible tuning cap in there; knowing the line frequency it should be possible to work backwards to find the coil inductance.
Definitely a good lunch time "homer"

As the parallel capacitance is around 22nF, the total inductance should be about 4.7mH.

Thanks everybody.

I shall await the response from Dazzlevision before going any further. If he has not a spare available I will set about trying to repair the former, or consider using another.

How would I go about working out the inductance of each side? There are two windings, I assume the total quoted 4.7mH is across both of them.

Hi GM, put one full layer on the core and with the core centralised measure the inductance.
This is the max inductance and will probably be in the microhenry range. Turns for say 5mH are proportional to the square of the turns (double turns L goes up 4 times) and should give you a reasonable range of adjustment about 4.7mH with the core

Hello GM,

I have unearthed a complete Thorn 1590 series spare chassis, with line oscillator coil, so the one I posted a photo of is available.

I will be in touch by PM.
