Just read through the above thread. It is amazing the amount of secret sauce that went into 20-30 sets. You can really see the different competing ideas before stuff settled down as the technology became more established.

Here is my video of a Carbon Pile Regulator in action. It's not a powder one, rather it uses carbon discs but the principle is the same.
