Default Hitachi SR503 left channel very quiet on stereo

This receiver is fine on FM mono, balance, volume etc all work fine as do both channels. But when on FM and mono/stereo button is pressed (stereo) the stereo tuning light comes on and then the left channel goes very quiet. Balance and volume still work but left channel super quiet. Has anyone else experienced this on 70's Hitachi receiver.?
