Default Ashtead Items 1 - Adsonic '66 "thing"

A friend of mine had to clear out his parents house in Ashtead recently and came across a veritable treasure trove of assorted electronic items. He does not want to throw them away at the local tip but also does not want to keep them. I have agreed to act as a go-between and offer them to fellow vintage electronics enthusiasts on this forum.

The first item looks really quite bizarre: An "Adsonic '66." Googling it comes up with some kind of device for reading the magnetic strip on amateur film reels - don't ask me how it could have worked!

I do not know if it actually does work but if someone wants it it is available at 10. You will have to go and collect it from Betchworth in Surrey where the friend lives and cash is the easiest option.

More items will follow as I sort through the photographs...

Possibly from a local radio station for playing ad "jingles". Could probably be repurposed as an echo/ effects loop for guitar etc

Hi,
I think it may be for adding sound to home recorded films...
at one point I think it may have been possible to get cine film with a magnetic stripe along it, so that it would be possible to add on a sound track at a later time.
I seem to remember that my Uncle had a projector with a facility to do this built in...

In the sixties, Zonal and others offered the facilty of adding magnetic stripe to 8mm film. There were also DIY kits for striping, which were a false economy, it being the devil's own job to lay it consistently without the proper machinery. This device is a projector base with a sound channel through which the striped film is looped, the projector being adjusted to the speed set by the capstan and pinch roller and slack taken up with moving guide.

Just noticed the item is not with you in Shoreham. I can still collect and am interested but it might be a bit later on on the week that I collect. I'll keep an eye out for other bits for sale. Any chance of a rummage when do collect?

I'd be interested in the Arcam device in the background of the photo.

What an odd-looking thing! If the rest is as unusual, I'll be checking back. Are you going to do the rest individually, or in this thread?

It's a tape-loop recorder/player from the days before adverts and jingles went on carts.

Note the sprung-mounted pulley to take up slack. There will be an optical stop to halt the thing ready to go after a bit of clear leader.

Just waiting to hopefully hear from Dave confirming his interest in this item. Ian (my friend in question) seems to be expecting a little bit of a rummage and so that should be possible. He has a few more items, it seems...

I will be doing the items individually to help me keep my head across it all. I will re-title the threads 'Betchworth Items' because I have only just realised that the Ashtead link is of no relevance to those interested in obtaining them.

Remove the 'l' in 'html' and it works.

Would the capstan just be a flywheel?

David and Ted are always fonts of knowledge but Ted seems to be right on this occasion The link didn't work for me but the Company Name led me to the same page. Not only was it an "Ad sonic" unit for striped 8mm film, they were even bringing out a 9.5 mm version! I've got a tape recorder in the North which I suspect did more or less the same thing at 8mm.

I only know about this process because I was following people like Ken Russell at the time who won an amateur film competition, using that level of equipment-if lucky. This got him a job at the Beeb and then he made ground breaking films about Elgar and Delius for the Monitor program. I used to get one of the amateur cinema mags mainly to check out that side of things. Enthusiasts were designing their own versions of the devices eg I still have copies of articles in my "scrap book" of the time eg "A pulse generator for Post-Sync Sound Tracks... Movie Maker May 1971". Others were for 16mm but it wasn't until I had a BBC interview [trainee sound recordist] that I found out the pulse system they employed also used 16mm [sprocketed] magnetic tape alongside the film that could be used in the film editor with a "clap" marker for perfect synchronisation. Somewhat more sophisticated I imagine but cumbersome compared with Pennebakers home made, hand held, 16mm cameras on the Dylan Tour etc.
