Default Murphy Day at Mill Green Museum - CANCELLED

Hello everyone,

The annual event in the BVWS Diary known as "Murphy Day" which is held at Mill Green Museum just outside of Welwyn Garden City was scheduled for this coming Sunday 18th September.

This event is now cancelled due to the Welwyn and Hatfield Council decision to no longer host events as a mark of respect to the late Queen Elizabeth II who's state funeral will take place on the following day.

The museum website has been changed to remove any events on this date.

The theme of the event was to have been a celebration of 70 years of the Queens reign.

The display would have included all Murphy radios, radiograms, televisions, export receivers and much associated ephemera from 1952 and 1953. Various audio recordings would have been played through the receivers and a 15" Murphy Table TV would have shown the 1953 Coronation.

Sadly this can no longer go ahead. However I have added two pictures of significant items that would have been on show that are not Murphy's.

The first is a shop window/wall decoration which was made by Philips and is very thick plaster on a wire frame in the form of a Laurel wreath with the crown atop and red, white and blue pigmy lamps. It was found in a terrible state in the store rooms of an old closed down radio shop where the damp had got the better of it. A new picture and significant paintwork restoration by Jim Hambleton has been carried out.
It might appear at Biggleswade.

The other is a Coronation neon light bulb of the same date placed in a BBC desk lamp.

Murphy Day will return in September 2023

I have closed this as requested by Mike, as it is intended as an announcement only.

I will update the BVWS website in the morning.

Just bumping this because the event would have been today. I hope everyone that was planning on going has seen one of the announcements.
