Thumbs up "Jubilee lifetime" Council battery

Shall we call this the Jubilee Battery? (see pic)
...finally replaced it today from a certain Council's basement to keep their BT test box going!

[tkx S. who just sent me this... and to Crompton Parkinson, of South Shields!]

I remember similar 'square' 1.5V batteries - albeit in brown cardboard waxed-cases - being handed out by the Signals people at COD Donnington in the mid-70s for use in our CCF line-telephones. They were clearly embarrassed by the vast number of such legacy batteries they had in stock, and if you wanted just a few they'd say "Here, take a couple of boxes".

Which was great because we strapped them up in batches-of-six and gave them out to other pupils to power their 9-volt transistor-radios.

This one was removed from an old AVO 7. The military ones as you say were always in wax cases. I think there were different sizes. John.

I bought a rather rare AVO8 range extension unit. I opened it up with some trepidation expecting any batteries left in there to have caused major corrosion.

I needn't have worried. They were all Eveready, zinc carbon vintage. And although they were completely dead, none of them had leaked. Must have been in there since the 60's.

Not like today's rubbish from all manufacturers that leak as soon as look at them.
