Default Muddy Valve ID

I was walking the other day and saw a rusty valve chassis down the bank immersed in the mire. A bit of slithering found a strange mix of corrugated iron that was perhaps once a shed with a car in, and I retrieved this remarkably sealed-looking valve. Some kind of magic eye?

Octal base, coke bottle, round eye... EM34?

second thoughts, weren't EM34 cylindrical bottles? So Y63, then.

Possibly from a junked R1155?

Y63 is probably the best known and most popular of shouldered-bottle, IO-based magic eyes, so quite likely- if you're lucky, it might even have some of that classic green glow left in it.

Y63. EM34s always had an asymmetrically split triode anode to drive the two sections of the display with differing sensitivities. They were also all in tubular envelopes. The connections also differ, with the grid and target pins transposed.

The valve pins are a giveaway two thick 'uns so far as I know (UX6) the 6E5GT's were octal.

VI103, CV1103 were also equivalents for the Y63.

The R1155 receiver was fitted with the VI103.

The VI103 looks very promising. It looks just like the reference photograph and the Radiomuseum dimensions are closer for that than for the Y63, which is slightly bigger. If it's from an R1155 then that's handy as I have one awaiting restoration! It doesn't look like it's gone to air so perhaps it will even work... Perhaps I'd better stroll down where I found it again and see if there's more archaelogy to be done.

It's not clear in my photographs that there is no pin six, which I just noticed. This supports VI103 as the datasheet mentions this pin is omitted.

What marvellous detectives you all are! Thank you.
