Whiteley 30s Radio. (Wartime Civilian Receiver. AC Version).
Hello all!
Wow, where to begin? Firstly, thanks to you all for such an amazing pool of knowledge and wisdom. This looks like it will be incredibly educational. I had been looking through some Whiteley threads discussing their older sets, but they appeared to be closed so please excuse my opening a new thread, however I'd love to share some pictures with you. It's a really fun looking set, but it has seen better days for sure. It appears someone has long gotten away with the rectifier and the field coil is dangling from the speaker, but I like a challenge! My father explained if we work out the heater voltage we could possibly identify the rectifier. I had wondered if anyone had any recommendations in sourcing anything documentation regarding the set? I've not had much luck researching the valves. There are 3, a 707, a z28291 (shielded in paint which is falling off) and one I haven't found a number on. I suppose figuring out the transformer in general would be a huge help! Wishing you all the best. Lindsay |

Re: Whiteley 30s Radio
That's the mains version of the "Wartime Civilian Receiver", a.k.a. a "Utility set".

Re: Whiteley 30s Radio. (Wartime Civilian Receiver. AC Version).
Hi Lindsay, a fairly standard set that will work with quite a range of easy to get valves.
It was a committee design and built by several firms to a common style/ standard. The only slight oddity is the detector, a Westector or copper oxide(?) diode mounted under the chassis. When you get going ask here as there will be plenty of people who will have suitable parts. A good set to start on. Ed |

Thanks for updating the thread title, and thank you Ed. That sounds great. It will be great to give it a well earned new lease of life! Providing I don't run into any accidents on the way that is...

Is that the output transformer hanging off the speaker?
