Sony TC-630: repair of broken shaft - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Greetings!

Recently the shaft moving the take-up idler got broken and detached from the main part (see attached).

Can you share ideas on its repair, please?
Or replacement (NOS or used parts available?) is the only option?

You call it a shaft but is it the part identified as item # A48 in the attached PDF section drawing ? In the Sony parts list this part is X-34440-08 Slider Ass'y (C)

Difficult from your photo to see the damage clearly, but looks like it could be very difficult to do a repair.

Also could be very difficult find a used or NOS replacement part. If you could find someone scrapping a TC-630 for parts that may be the best option of sourcing the part.

Are you able to get a better/closer photo of the damaged area ?

If it's the upright that's snapped off and I had that problem and nothing else was forthcoming I would attach it back again using a small steel "L" bracket fixed with a couple of rivets and solder around the joints for extra security.
(countersink hole(s) to take flush rivet(s))

Jewellers or model makers might have brazing or TIG welding facilities.

They could add extra metal to make it stronger than the original design.

I agree with Silicon. If it can be removed I think it looks thick enough to be welded. I think mig might be best as I think the heat could be kept a bit more localised. I've only had experience with mig and oxy-acetylene so I'm open to correction with tig as far as heat localisation is concerned.

I'd go for Silicon's brazing or silver-soldering option; less heat than welding.
