Built in audio wiring - connectors unknown
Hi All
I have moved into a new house -there are speakers built into every room. In the lounge, there is this connector panel, which I assume allows you to connect your audio unit. Any idea what kind of connector is needed...? Many thanks J |

Re: Built in WiFi - connectors unknown
The upper 3 sockets appear to be female DIN speaker connectors: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_co...aker_connector
I've no idea what the lower 3 are. The photo isn't very clear. |

Re: Built in WiFi - connectors unknown
Those appear to be DIN speaker connectors, very common through the 70's & 80's.
I would assume, given the lack of any power switches or controls, that one would connect their chosen amplifier & associated system to these. A multimeter would be useful to check there's nothing shorted and to get an idea of the impedance (measured in Ohms) before risking connecting anything to them. Edit- Crossed posts with Paul, I believe the lower 3 are also DIN just the angle of the shot. A straight on photo would confirm though. |

These are going to be c.30-35 years old or more and I would want the check the quality and continuity of the linking cables behind the brass panel.

Beware it is very easy to accidentally pull those sort plugs out. Could lead to an amp at high volume suddenly losing it's loading.

Probably why there are traces of tape on the plate. These connectors were fine for general fit and forget use, but are a bit exposed on that wall-plate.

Personally if I were to use these I would replace them (once the wiring has been checked for quality/polarity) with speakON connectors, they are slightly larger but don't fall out.

Re: Built in audio wiring - connectors unknown
I have used 3 pole XLR connectors with latching facility. They are extremely well made and have substantial solder cups for wiring up.

Re: Built in audio wiring - connectors unknown
A cheaper option would be to use traditional quarter inch jack plugs and sockets. These were standard connectors for stage equipment before Speakons became popular.

Re: Built in audio wiring - connectors unknown
They are indeed all speaker DIN connectors, much loved by B&O of course, although this wallplate seems home made perhaps? The DIN connectors are readily available, but not the greatest as others have stated!
How may other rooms have speakers? The plate could be the connection for three stereo pairs ie three rooms. You could buy a 'speaker switch box to connect all the rooms to your system. What connectors do you have on your system? |
