Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
I'm wondering if its still possible to find those kind of televisions, I saw my brothers have one once, did they have a specific brand name?

In the UK, you can get them for vitually free in charity shops and on eBay.
But new? No, not for at least 5 years, I reckon. Nick. |

Re: Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
As I recall, Sony and Panasonic made quite a few of them, but I'm sure there were others. Around here quite a few turn up in the local sales adverts, often for quite low prices. In fact, they're about the cheapest crt sets around. Not sure why, but I guess it's just because they're extra bulky/heavy and more difficult to collect.

Re: Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
The wide screen certainly makes them not only heavy, but awkward in shape. No fun shifting them, that's for sure. A 28" 4:3 is pretty much manageable, despite not being that much smaller - it's all down to the shape.

Re: Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
The width and push towards as flat a screen as possible tended to result in them having ridiculously thick faceplates as well. Remember my previous Panasonic (36" from memory) looked to be nearly an inch thick at the corners. Thing weighed a ton! Moved house no less than three times with it too...
Eventually died when there was a major power supply fault that nuked most of the silicon on the PCB. |

Even my Sony 24” WS is ridiculously heavy because of the completely flat (from the front) screen. It's really a 2 man lift, though I can just manage to manhandle it into and out of a car alone.

Re: Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
I have 4 here!! 1 really cheap and nasty one who's cabinet is falling apart (still works fine though!) a Bush branded one that isn't a bad set, works OK and gives a fairly good picture, and a 32" Samsung slimfit with HDMI input and built in freeview. that one weighs a tonne! I've got it on the workshop floor, and I can't move it, at least not on my own, it may have sunk into the carpet tiles and got glued to the floor... I also have a 15" Sony portable one which is a pretty decent little set, although lacking stereo sound.
If anyone wants the one that's falling apart, the bush, or another non widescreen Panasonic, they are all free to anyone who can take them away!! Regards, Lloyd. |

I've also seen some later model widescreen CRTs that were HD and even had HDMI sockets. I don't think there's many of those around either. They'd certainly be more future proof if you can find one. Despite the general popularity however, I've not seen any real benefit in flatter screens. My curved 4:3 TVs look fine to me. I don't perceive any distortion. Anyway, if I was looking for a widescreen CRT, I'd also check out the eBay search feature for local collection listings. |

Re: Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
Here's the Samsung, showing a picture from it's inbuilt freeview. It does 100hz scanning on standard definition, but only 50hz on HDMI, so the HD picture is a bit flickery.
I've included a shot of the set with the back off, so you can see how slim the CRT is! Regards, Lloyd |

The deflection angle on that CRT is very impressive, and you have to land the electron beams accurately to achieve convergence.
Coincidentally I powered up my old CRT flat screen that has been languishing in the garage waiting for something exciting to happen to it?? The test card is 4:3 on 16:9 raster. |

Not bad for being a 4:3 picture, I would like one but it needs to be in Denmark, and they seem pretty rare here.

Re: Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
You can see how slim the Samsung is but you can't tell from the photo how heavy the thing is! The later ones were surprisingly good though the CRTs could fail with high beam current. They looked identical to their contemporary LCD sets from the front and at the time were cheaper. I doubt it was worth all the investment they put into them though.

Re: Widescreeen CRT's, are they still available?
Yes, they are stupidly heavy! I'm not sure how I managed it, but I got the CRT out of the cabinet so the cabinet could be washed, it was owned by a heavy smoker and absolutely stunk when I got it, and the cabinet was all sticky too. I nearly threw the thing away it was so disgusting! Still pongs a bit when it's warmed up...
I must say, that Toshiba looks impressive! Lloyd |
