Probably one of the best explanations of how vintage television works can occasionally be seen on Talking Pictures TV - it's a film made by Bush's parent company and includes contributions from EMI, Bush and Mullard.

Gosh that brought back some memories: Ampex VR2000. Scotch 400 video tape. Dunno what the deck with the horizontal mechanism was, though the VR1000 was similar and had the audio monitor & video monitor mounted above, but is unlikely to still be in use in the late 70s.
