Interestingly, I've just noticed that the post you linked to was timed at 1.09am and mine was timed at 1.08am - very strange.

It was just by chance I logged in at this late hour and then noticed this thread. Having just read through it, I may well get a telling off from Paul for 'pointless posting' on this particular thread. Ah well, it's just a bit of fun!

And it had to happen at some ungodly hour while most of us were in the land of nod... Congrats to whoever won the prize, whatever it turns out to be.

I agree, and if someone can arrange it, I'll cover the cost.
I particularly like how the fates sneaked it in amidst a few that might just have been intended to garner the rosette. Besides, I'm glad it's not me. David

Yes, I think Linescan87 got in with his 'genuine' post between my two. I wonder if he knows he's won the Guinness

Re: 1,000,000th Forum Post Coming Up!
I have to say I'm a little embarrassed but quite proud at the same time. It has been a privilege to be a member of this site for over 6 years now.
I remember how I came across this site, when searching for information about a standards converter for my Pye V510/A which would be about 12 years ago now. I can safely say there has not been a day since that I have not looked in for few minutes at least. It's great to pull the phone out of your pocket while waiting for a doctor's appointment, the wife while she is shopping or whatever. The countless hours the forum has kept bored at bay and kept me inspired, it's like having all the great magazines of yesteryear in one small package. I also never fail to be impressed by the patience given by senior and experienced members to new people seeking help and advice, which sadly in my opinion is often taken for granted or ignored. The sheer knowledge base here is also incredible, who often have you seen some obscure part, board, device or whatnot posted only for someone to come back with an answer almost straight away? I have been also happy to meet quite a few members at the NVCF and at Mikey's over the years, with myself and my friend John always made very welcome. While the idea of a "slab" of stout is appealing it's not required, access to this wonderful forum is reward enough. None of this would be possible without the great work of Paul Stenning and his Moderators. Thank you all for making this such a wonderful resource! John Joe. P.s. I might print off the post and frame it in my workshop! |

I made the offer and I'd like to stand by it. If you get a wooden crate, you could always re-work it into a frame. How can we arrange it .... other beers are perfectly acceptable, but sending Guinness to Ireland has a certain humour.
The best things in life are not the ones which are required! David

Seriously David, I wouldn't hear of it though it is very generous of you. Your contributions are more than enough for me.

Just a few under 48,576 more posts needed to reach a round number then...

Aw go on and take the beer, you can always give it away (after a quality control check). Our local "Rebellion" brewery does deliveries, many of my mates have taken it up.

It took about 18 years to get to that landmark. I suspect it will take a lot less time to clock up the next million. At 400 posts per day (which is about the average now) it would take around 7 years. |

Out of curiosity, where did vintage radio enthusiasts congregate online before this forum?

Re: 1,000,000th Forum Post Coming Up!
Widespread internet use was still quite limited in 2002. For example my area (not rural) didn't have broadband access until 2003. Before 2000 there wasn't much in the way of choice in terms of specialist forums. The short answer to the question posed in the previous post is 'they didn't'.

Re: 1,000,000th Forum Post Coming Up!
The main online option before then was probably usenet groups. Some people had websites on services like Geocities too but of course that was one-way communication.
In the earlier years this forum was nowhere near as busy as it is now, probably because internet access was a lot less common back then. As Alan says, many people were still on dial-up back them. |

Interesting to see what post No.1 was!!
I have been a member for a very long time and originally I was using a dial up modem for my computer as that was what was only available at the time. Didn’t even have a mobile telephone for several years either. Christopher Capener
