Default Mike Barker's announcement

At the BVWS AGM yesterday Mike Barker announced that he will only be standing for 4 more years as chairman of the BVWS. At that point he will have been on the committee for 25 years and chairman for 20 years.

He will then stand down completely from the committee. He will continue to run the auctions including collecting, storing and lotting items etc, as well as looking after component sales, but that's all.

The rest of the committee are very grateful that he has given us all such long notice so we have time to sort out how the BVWS will move forward over the coming years, before and after his departure.

It will clearly be a period of transition, but Greg taking over from Jeremy as treasurer has shown how smoothly the change of a key committee member role can be done with the right planning and organisation.

It is likely that the size of the committee will increase a bit to spread out some of the jobs Mike currently does to new roles.

We will probably have a committee meeting in the next month or so and should know more then. Keep an eye on the bulletin "From the chair" for updates.

Personally I never cease to be amazed at the amount of time, effort and enthusiasm Mike puts into the running of the BVWS, and did not realise he had been doing this for so long. There is only so long anyone can sustain this, and for most people it wouldn't be anything like 25 years!

No doubt about it Mike has done and does a superb job. For which we members should be very grateful.

Of course it goes without saying that there are others doing good work as well.
