Default Re: "Everyday Electronics" and other defunct magazines.

This thread is a trip down memory lane. Hopefully some of the questions have been answered.

To those who might be having a clear out, I would like to find:
i) the first, undated and un-numbered, issue of Amateur Radio from 1981
ii) the last issue of Radio & Electronics World, dated April 1989
iii) the 75th anniversary edition of the Post office Engineering Journal in 1981

Please do not get me going on the subject of libraries reducing their holdings. The library in Birmingham moved to a new building a few years ago, and some good material is no longer there.

Re. post #26, and copyright libraries, there are five in the UK: the British Library, the national libraries of Scotland and Wales, and the university libraries of Cambridge and Oxford. The library at Trinity College Dublin is also a copyright library. My understanding is that works in the UK have to be offered to these libraries. it is their choice as to whether they accept or keep them. Getting to them is another issue.

Re. post #40, QEX is definitely slender these days.

As a supplement to John's list above, here is a timeline of Practical magazines (at least the electronics-related ones) that I prepared some time ago (an earlier version of which was included in the American Radio History site):

13-02-1932
... Practical Wireless began as a supplement in Hobbies magazine
(extensive wireless-related material in 23-01-1932)

24-09-1932
... First issue of Practical Wireless as separate a weekly magazine

09-12-1933
... First appearance of Practical Television as a supplement in Practical Wireless, becoming weekly from 20-01-1934

Sept. 1934
... Practical Television first published as a separate monthly magazine
(at some point renamed Practical Television and Short-Wave Review)

01-09-1934
... Supplement in Practical Wireless becomes Amateur Television

18-05-1935
... Last supplement of Amateur Television, but retained in title until 02-11-1935*

Nov. 1935
... Last issue of Practical Television and Short-Wave Review as a separate magazine, again becoming a weekly supplement in Practical Wireless from 02-11-1935

27-07-1940
... Last weekly issue of Practical Wireless, announcing a “temporary” change to monthly publication*

Sept. 1940
... First monthly edition of Practical Wireless*

20-04-1940
... Last Practical Television supplement in Practical Wireless*, but retained in title until May 1942

March 1949
... Practical Television restarts as a supplement to Practical Wireless

April 1950
... Practical Television restarts as a separate magazine

Nov. 1964
... First issue of Practical Electronics magazine

Oct. 1970
... Practical Television drops the “Practical” to become just Television

Nov. 1992
... Practical Electronics merges with Everyday Electronics to become Everyday Practical Electronics

May 2008
... Last issue of Television magazine before it ceases publication

N.B. Although the title Practical Wireless is used throughout the above, various additions such as “and Amateur” and/or “and Practical/Amateur Television” have been made at certain times (see below).

A minor correction to Dave's update. Television ceased publication with the January 2007 issue but was re-launched in January 2008 ceasing publication with the June 2008 issue.

Thanks Keith. I should have included mention of that eleven month gap in my original timeline document. I have now done so.

I used to take Everyday Electrionics back in the 70s/80s and constructed a number of projects, but it suddenly disappeared from the shelves and I wondered what had happened to it. I didn't realise that it had become absorbed into EPE, and didn't see EPE on the shelves either. Perhaps the decline in interest was such that newsagents simply stopped stocking electronics magazines?

In my post #21 and #23 I asked if C&G Model answers are still available and also asked about technical education today, does any one have any information about this? I only ask as I used to be involved with apprentice training many years ago, and found the C&G Model answers very useful.
Cheers

Thanks for those compilation lists chaps-very useful. I've been able to find a some mags for Dave in the past John and I do have some Amateur Radio in the north but not sure about the electronics? I'll take a look later this month anyway.

Thanks to John (post 42) for the info on deposit libraries. Unfortunately being in NZ it's a little difficult to get to them but fortunately there is the US website with scanned copies. it really leads onto the question of why there is no 'technical' depository that would have the long term aim of digitising material and making it available on the net. To me it smacks of the divide within society where the elitist items such as literatures will be preserved at public cost but anything not seen in the same light can be discarded or ignored. A similar problem exists with car technical manuals here - libraries refuse to interloan them, but as an academic (Egyptologist) I can get any amount of obscure material sent to me.

Officially, as mentioned earlier in the thread, it was Practical Electronics that was absorbed into Everyday Electronics and renamed Everyday Practical Electronics (EPE).

Adding to David's list (#43), the British Library catalogue shows that Television changed names as follows:
.. Television and Home Electronics Repair, Mar 2001 - May 2004
.. Television and Consumer Electronics, May 2004 -
Clearly there is a mistake in one of these catalogue entries.

The changing names of magazines is a nuisance when trying to find materials in library catalogues. it must also be a nuisance to newsagents, who have to keep track of the changes. See post #46.

There seems to have been a rush into publishing electronics and amateur radio magazines in the early 1980's. This would have been after the recession of 1980-81. Ambit International took over Radio & Electronics Constructor and turned it into Radio & Electronics World. Amateur Radio and Ham Radio Today were started. I can only assume that various computer magazines were started then as well.

R&EW faded badly after it was sold by Ambit. It ceased publication in April 1989. Amateur Radio, which was then owned by the same publisher ceased publication in Nov. 1990. There was a lot of competition for customers, and for newsagents' shelf space. There was also a recession in 1990-91.

Publishing magazines is not easy. I had never heard of Electronics in Action (#29), which had a short life. More recently Monitoring Monthly, which was published by Kevin Nice after he left Short Wave Magazine, had a relatively short life, from Feb 2006 to May 2009. Each year he published a special issue, which made the volume numbering a little odd:
.. 2006 Vol 1, Feb #1, June #5, Special #6, Dec #12
.. 2007 Vol 2, Jan #1, Sept #9, Special #10, Dec #13
.. 2008 Vol 3, Jan #1, Sept #9, Special #10, Dec #13
.. 2008 Vol 4, Jan #1, May #5, (ceased publication)
Having special issues and / or more than 12 issues in a year can be a challenge for collectors.

While I am at this, here is an outline of Short Wave Magazine:
.. Mar 1937 - Sept 1939, Vol 1 - Vol 3 #8
.. Mar 1946 - Feb 1986, Vols 4 - 43
.. Mar 1986 - Mar 1987, Vol 44 (13 issues)
.. Apr 1987 - Dec 1987, Vol 45
.. Jan 1988 - Dec 2005, Vols 46 - 63 (merged with Radio Active into Radio User)

Radio User has a history:
.. CB. Citizens Band, Dec 1980 - Jan 1996
.. New CB. Citizens Band, Feb 1996 - Oct 1996
.. CB, Nov 1996 - Nov 1997
.. Radio Active, Dec 1997 - Dec 2005
.. Radio User, Jan 2006 -, Vol 1 -
The British Library Catalogue shows that CB World was a preceding title to CB. Citizen's Band. It seems that this was published by the IPC Electrical-Electronic Press in Sutton from March 1981 - Nov 1982. Perhaps it was absorbed by CB. Citizens Band ?

A quick check of my library confirms that the latter subtitle did indeed run from May 2004 to the end of production (including the brief 2008 relaunch), so the former subtitle was last used April 2004.

I didn't hang around out there (the outhouse containing my magazine library is too darned cold), but I believe that a subtitle was used with most (or all) editions after "Practical" was dropped from the title. I'll report back in due course.

Nomination for the most repeated / revised / revisited projects featured in electronics hobby magazines:

...Sound to Light?

...Slave Flash?

At one time it seemed hardly a month went by without one or other of the magazines featuring a 'Slave Flash' circuit. Since I couldn't afford to buy film, these projects were of less than zero interest to me, unfortunately.

Car interior-light delay-units seemed to appear regularly in pretty much every electronics mag, ranging from the simple one-transistor-one-resistor-and-one-capacitor variety to setups using 555s which gave a delay but also turned the light off immediately you started the engine. "Lights-left-on alarm" circuits were also popular at one time.

Silicon Chip magazine got stuck in a revolving door of "Drill/Motor Speed" controllers, power supplies and revamps of various amplifier modules at one stage.

Haha, there did seem to be a lot of repetition of projects like 'Windscreen wiper delay' or 'Electronic Dice', my fave 'Simple Fuzz box'.

I subscribed to 'Shortwave' mag and there always seemed to be a 'Simple one valve receiver' in every edition!

Quite so. The full story from the point in October 1970 when it changed from Practical Television, it was Television...
(October 1970 to June 1975)... servicing * construction * colour * developments
(July 1975 to November 1977)... servicing * video * construction * colour * developments
(December 1977 to April 1984)... servicing * video * construction * developments
(May 1984 to December 1991)... servicing * projects * video * developments
(January 1992 to February 2001)... servicing * video * satellite * developments
(March 2001 to April 2004)... and home electronics repair
(May 2004 to June 2008)...and consumer electronics

This discussion of "Television" magazine has prompted me to remember that Data Publications, who were the publishers of Radio Constructor, briefly published "Television News". The following information comes from various library catalogues. There were several name changes, and so the exact name at any time may be slightly different.

Television News, Nov 1948 - Dec 1949, (absorbed by Scan)
.. Vol 1 - Vol 2 #2

Scan (the journal of television), May 1948 - Dec 1949
.. Vol 1 - Vol 2 #8
Scan and Television News Jan 1950 - June 1951
.. Vol 3 #9 - Vol 4 #2
Television News (incorporating Scan), July 1951 - 1952
.. Vol 4 #3 - Vol 5 #1
TV News, 1952 - Nov 1955
.. Vol 5 #2 - Vol 8 #10

It appears that Practical Television (posts #43 and #58) also used a subtitle. The information below comes from delving into the issues at americanradiohistory.com

Practical Television, Apr - Aug 1950, Vol 1 #1 to Vol 1 #5

Practical Television and Television Times, Sept / Oct 1950 - May 1961
.. Vol 1 #6 to Vol 11#128
.. Practical Television and Television Times on both front cover and title page

Practical Television (and Television Times), Jun 1961 - Mar 1965
.. Vol 11 #129 to Vol 15#174
.. Practical Television on front cover
.. Practical Television and Television Times on title page
I will leave to others to decide the correct title. It seems that libraries have used both.

Practical Television, Apr 1965 - Sept 1970
.. Vol 15 #175 - Vol 20 #240
