Default Selsyn motors - ex RN Hartley tape recorder

I have an ex-RN (I believe) Hartley Electromotives HR1001/1 tape deck - see the Tape-recorder section.

This has an unusual BT-H Selsyn, geared capstan motor drive, probably for ultra-low recording speeds, yet the Selsyn motor was usually used in cine-sound synchronisaton or finely controlled movement such as radar emplacements.

Are there any ex-RN sparks or MOD boffins who can throw some light on this mystery deck, its application and the reason for the Selsyn motor?

Thanks
Barry

Does your machine have a sync input for the Selsyn?
If not, and it's supplied by some sort of oscillator, perhaps it's simply used for speed stability and easy control. As I mentioned in the other thread, Hartley apparently has design problems with the speed change mech on the TapeRiter, so maybe this was a 'solid state' solution.

Hi Dave,

This predates the TRD based TapeRiter; that the motor has worm geared drive suggests very low speed - possibly 24-hr operation. 'Tis a mystery!
