Default Free Elektor Magazine!

A chum just alerted me to this offer.

If you watch this video Blog (about the construction of an Elektor Geieger Counter kit), you can claim a year's free Elektor magazine (that six issues worth £69.95), plus 10% discount on Elektor items:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WBF2c7_RwQ

Elektor is of no interest to me - as with Silicon Chip projects they tend to be complex, PIC based, requiring components not easily sourced in the UK, double-sided commercially produced PCBs, and rarely have any relevance to my spheres of interest.

That said, no doubt there will be forum members who are indeed interested in the magazine, and for those, it looks like a good 'summat for nowt' offer. Presumably Elektor will hope that having had the magazine free for a year, at least some readers will wish to continue to buy it, especially since it's not been available from bookshops for some time now - only on subscription.

Hope that might interest someone.

Thanks David.

While I agree most of it is not really of interest, if, they are going to give it away for free, I'm not going to argue.

Lovely!! I was always a fan of Elektor in the 70s and 80s: their designs were invariably well-worked-out and worked more-reliably than many of those in equivalent mags. They produced proper commercial-grade PCBs for their projects, which was always more attractive to me than all the faff andf bother of etching my own.

[My first home computer was an Elektor 'Junior' back in about 1981 - I used it as a RTTY-decoder/converter-to-ASCII].

Thanks for the heads-up. Started watching the video then clicked the link and filled out the form - successfully at the third attempt. One of those annoying websites that don't tell you the required information or their password requirements until after you have completed the form...
(its 8 chars min with a capital and a number).

I've signed up. Elektor was my magazine of choice from the late 70's; more advanced content than the UK hobby mags.

It is in fact quite sad!!! Elektor in the beginning was a superb magazine, but as with all technology it followed the most modern ground breaking stuff.
I agree with post # 1, and with post #2. Now no interest to me.
Some of the origional audio projects using discrete components, were very often far far better than what was on offer from the commercial producers. Their test equipment was also very good, but as mentioned involved sourcing bits from Europe ( yes, parts were not easily available here either ). I have not bought the magazine for at least 20 years.

Don't forget that access back to issues from 1990 is included in the deal, just in case there was anything of interest way back then.

G'day Terry,
I still have hard copies from the beginning in Australia. In 1990 you already need a couple of 32 bit processors to have a digital letter opener!!

My collection ends about 1985.

Thanks for the info David. Iwill take a look. I used to take Elektor after it was first published but gave up when it liked computer type articles the most. I still have the 2M to 70CM transverter built. One huge pcb! I only got it working after borrowing the Spec analyser from work. It worked well, may still do. Relegated to a shelf in the garage for decades!

Thanks for the heads up David, very useful!
I was able to logon with my old lapsed Elektor logon and obtain the free subscription.

I watched a little too much of the video - when he demonstrated ignorance of the resistor colour code and called a 1N4... diode IN.... I stopped watching!

If you take up the free membership, as I did, just make sure you do not delete your cookies, as i did. Turns out your membership status is kept on your computer as a cookie, and not on their servers.
I had to re-register under a different name to get the free membership back.

Has anyone actually received a paper magazine yet from them through the free subscription?
I’ve written and had an acknowledgement but no reply yet.

I have not received a paper magazine.
The real value to me is access to all the back issues.

I think the offer is for a free green Elektor magazine subscription, this would be digital download only. You need a gold sub to get paper copies.

Green Sub is digital only, so you wont be getting a paper magazine.

You will need to get online and download the pdf.

Thanks for your replies, I did suspect as much. However if Elektor say anything different in their email I’ll let you all know.
