One of the arguments used by Bauer for a minimal fine was from the governments digital review suggesting that broadcasters should be aiming for the migration from AM by the mid 2020’s.

The Ofcom report referenced in the article in post # 79 has more detail.

Note I am not saying the fine is OK, just pointing out some of the back story.

Sadly I don't think we will appreciate the virtues of AM radio until it's too late.
Recently at the RAF Museum at RAF Cosford, as part of a visitor group, I had a guided tour. We were given a lot of political background to many of the exhibits and stories along the lines of “these were scrapped/cancelled/sold off and then three years later we found we needed them...” abounded.

AM radio has several drawbacks but perhaps the biggest is that it is old-fashioned.

The fact that the fine was only a tenth of the maximum, and hence not punitive, is a good enough indication that Ofcom (sensibly in my view), took into account that there were strong mitigating factors - namely the the inexorably decline in listenership, and as a consequence, declining advertising revenue making the station commercially non-viable.

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre...er-radio-25000

It's rather ironic that by Bauer renewing their licence for ten years in 2021 and continuing to run the AM station for another two years, they have incurred a £25,000 fine, whereas if they'd not renewed the licence in 2021 and instead closed it down then, they'd (presumably) have not incurred a penalty.

I'm sad to see it go, and even more sad that RTE has gone, but it's understandable, and seem inevitable that more will follow.

I see Kalundborg in Denmark is for the chop, too. Another name off the dial.

It'll be very sad to see the iconic Droitwich aerial taken down. I always glance at it fondly when going past on the M5. Also the end of the famous "singing gate" which I was fortunate enough to witness on a guided tour.

I’ve started a similar thread on The Mausoleum Club forum if anyone is interested.

Mods, apologies if this breaks any forum rules

And saved the cost of the licence and saved two years' cost of transmission.

Other broadcasters will have been watching this and clicking away at their abacus.

When I first had Economy 7 I had a thumping great Venner time switch telling a Ferraris meter when to change the drive to the appropriate band.
