Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
Hey guys
I am starting another project but unfortunately it’s suffered some previous damage. The 405/625 switch is still working which is a great start. It’s missing a valve and ones gone white and one of the line hold pots is also damaged. There is a lovely layer of dust on this. I hope I can do this one. Courtney

Any help or advice just to wake it up would be greatly appreciated.

This Thorn 900 chassis is easy to do and has the reliable jelly pot lopt. The multisection
cap may be ok, but you will need to replace the capacitors e.g Dubilier. It would be good to get the manual, or at least the articles in Practical Television that cover it. There was a valve complement diagram attached to the (missing) lopt cover plate. |

I have the lopt cover plate and diagram attached to it, I just removed it for the photo.

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
Looks like the 30FL14 and PFL200 valves are missing. It's often said the PCF808 is a suitable alternative to the former, but not often the case with Foreign made replacements. Some of the UK made Mazda's are marked as 30FL14/PCF808.
As others have said, it shouldn't be difficult in getting the set running. My example actually worked when woken by a lamp limiter. This is how it looked when full mains was applied! As others have said all the old Dublier capacitors will need to be replaced. As for the broken hold control the carbon track looks intact. May be repairable if a suitable replacement can't be found? |

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
There certainly appears to be a lot still around!
As others have said, change all the plastic cased caps in the line and frame timebases. Easy to do and being printed circuit it can be done with no mistakes! They served us well but are becoming very leaky now. Don't forget the two Gray .01uf, one hidden behind the frame linearity pot on the extreme left of the chassis. There is very little if anything to go pop in the 900 chassis. It just requires a simple lamp limiter start up and like F.D. carried out with his example. If you get a frame collapse where the line is 'wiggly' check the tab thermistor on the scan coil assembly. [Short it out] You have the early UHF valve tuner in yours. If you are stuck for the missing valves I can find you a couple. Regards, John. PS Just switched mine on after a long period of disuse. |

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
They are lovely little sets. As everybody says, not many stock faults. That afore mentioned scan coil thermistor can cause a puzzling frame lin fault if it goes high resistance. Left to its own devices such a fault would just produce low height, but then someone winds the height control up to compensate and the output valve finishes up working on the non-linear part of its curve. Mine also had a dodgy intermittent cap in one of the IF cans which produced a strange fault, but I don't think that's common. If you need a copy of the circuit let me know

My example working on 625-lines. Note how the colour components of the test pattern stand out.
The 900-950s gave especially good results on 625-lines, unlike the 1400s that followed. Last edited by Focus Diode; 28th Jul 2020 at 4:04 am. |

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
Don't forget the Dublier capacitor behind the PFL200 in its sync seperator section. Gives this peculiar effect when it fails.
The set will come on normally, then after a few minutes the height shifts downwards with corrugated verticals. The frame lock otherwise remains stable. Had exactly the same fault on two of these sets. |

Doesn’t look like it’s ever been worked on.

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
Mine had been "restored" when i bought it and they managed to trap the wiring behind the controls and the EHT lead has a section of insulation missing. but despite my moaning it has a lovely picture on it.
Cheers Neil. |

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
VRAT probably has some service data for the 900.

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
Mine was much the same, yet it seems the line output valve had been replaced quite early in its life with a Mullard PL500.

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
So the tube is good and that’s on 405. I haven’t tried 625 yet as the linearity pot is damaged.
So recap time when they arrive!! Thank you to the amazing people here who have sent me the knobs and valves. If anyone has the clear part for the 405 channel change or the dimensions that would be awesome. Kindest C

Re: Ferguson Dual Standard Personal (Yes another one)
It's a pity, the outer ring (vhf fine tune) and the inner knob mount are missing.
Perhaps someone has one spare. |
